Government of Dominica response to animal feed shortage

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy is taking steps to address a shortage of animal feed, which is currently impacting the livestock subsector.  The shortage is as a result of high seas which prevented shipping vessels from docking on January 5th and January 11th. The Ministry has further been informed that consignments of animal feed expected to arrive on January 19th will not be delivered on the said date.

The Ministry of Agriculture reaffirms its commitment to the livestock farmers and is working closely with affected farmers on feeding and management practices. The Ministry of Agriculture convened an urgent meeting on Monday, January 15th with animal feed suppliers and the President of the Poultry and Livestock Growers Association to discuss solutions to immediately respond to the shortage and to prevent a recurrence. The current situation supports the Government’s decision to invest in an animal feed plant to provide a reliable and cost-effective option to livestock farmers on the island.

As a short-term measure, the Ministry has placed an urgent order for animal feed with a neighbouring island, which is expected to arrive as early as Thursday, January 18th. Seventy (70) percent of the consignment is earmarked for layer birds as they are the most affected due to the lack of commercial feed.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Blue and Green Economy assures livestock farmers of the Government’s commitment to do all within its power to bring relief at the soonest possible time.

The livestock subsector is a key component of national efforts to achieve food and nutrition security and the Government of Dominica will spare no effort to safeguard the livelihoods of the livestock farmers on the island.

I expect they would have. Problem is that the government seems to have been broke for a while now. From what I have heard, most payments have to be (in my Ma Boyd voice) approved by Tall FS Edwards.

I supect this was not a priority until now. What a mess we found oursleves in

More shortages, more missteps, more lacking of essentials. When will the people of this country open their eyes and see what is really lacking. Lacking is a caring leadership that puts the well-being of the country first, not their avaricious drive to accumulate all that there is for themselves and their small band of lackeys. Be forewarned, nothing made by man, having to do with man lasts forever, and the day must come when the people will say enough is enough. If you don’t believe that, ask Hitler, Mussolini, Saddam, and all the various other tinpot leaders that received an inglorious End. The clock is ticking. Tick tock, tick tock.

Every ministry, all sectors of the economy are saturated wth problems. The country is is unarguably in peril. The many seemingly plausible excuses and honeyed promises and assurances do nothing to ease the mental anguish of the people.

It’s from one crisis to another. It is out of the frying-pan into the fire. The truth is that this ruling kleptocracy uses fraudulent means to get elected but CANNOT govern. These questionable characters are setting fires to all spheres of government.

If we are to solve the myriad of problems presently plaguing Dominica, we have to work to change the thinking of the people. We have to change the mindset of the majority citizens from dependency to self-dependence/self reliance. Dependency makes slaves out of people.

If we are to solve the myriad of problems presently plaguing Dominica, we have to change the thinking of the people. We have to change the mindset of the majority of citizens from dependency to self dependence. WOW. Did you just wake up? Are you just now realizing that this is the problem on island? Government can’t be all things to all people and that’s the problem. Yes, there will always be a segment of the population in any society that requires assistance but we cannot have this as the norm for the majority of citizens. There is something called personal responsibility and that’s what is grossly lacking on island.

Hopefully, this statement, coming from a major opposition mouthpiece, causes folks to pause for a moment, examine themselves and ask the question, am I doing all that I can possibly do to make my situation a little better. You might be pleasantly surprised at what you discover.

Roosevelt does not provide the incentives nor the opportunities for Dominicans to flourish economically.

Watch the high unemployment rate; low wages and salaries; widespread political victimization, discrimination and exclusion; nepotism and cronyism.

If corruption were to be seriously minimised, and the resources of the state shared equitably , and we were to get visionary leadership, Dominica would become the envy of the Caribbean. Selfish, corrupt and incompetent leadership is mostly responsible for the dastardly state of affairs in the country.

I am very glad government is investing in an animal feed plant. There are some so called patriotic Dominicans living overseas who have done nothing in Dominica. All they do is go on q95 with the media whore and run their lying mouth. Those so called patriots spent all their young and fruitful years working for foreign countries for foreign people. Now they are old, useless broke and weak, they want to run a country they have never invested in.That will never happen.

The importation of livestock feed is done by the private sector, generally. The Treasury is not involved.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 2 Thumb down 7
