A message from the RayAsta Foundation in observance of World Stroke Day 2023

Jennifer Astaphan

Today, October 29th, 2023, we are joining forces with the global community to mark World Stroke Day. This significant day is a reminder of the urgent need to raise awareness about stroke, its causes, signs, prevention, and the importance of immediate action.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide as well as here in Dominica. These alarming facts highlight the critical need for our foundation to educate everyone about this silent killer and for us to take better care of our health.

At the RayAsta Foundation, our major initiatives currently include education of the public and training to caregivers who can provide support to stroke survivors and their families. We anticipate that in the future our programs and services will expand.

Be vigilant for these warning signs – Face drooping, Arm weakness, and Speech difficulty. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s Time to call emergency services (FAST). Remember, stroke symptoms are reversible if you receive treatment within three hours of the onset of a stroke.

On this World Stroke Day 2023, we invite you to join forces with us. Visit us on Facebook and Instagram to learn more about strokes and our services. Let’s work towards reducing the incidence of strokes in Dominica.

You have a wife…? Surely not! Who could possibly put up with something like YOU on a daily basis. Are you fibbing again, Mr. Telekak?

So, here is a continuation of what I intended to convey in my first submission:
The main symptoms of strokes are:
Paralysis or numbness or inability to move parts of The face, arm, or leg; particularly on one side of The body.
. Confusion- including trouble with speaking
    . Headache with vomiting
. Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
. Metallic taste in the mouth
    . Difficulty in swallowing
.Trouble in walking: term impaired coordination
    . Dystonia
    . Alexia
    .Agnosia
It is important to note in my case; I did not have any symptoms; I was also on blood thinners prior: as a diabetic for years I took two different kinds of blood thinners, as each one thins the blood differently.
I overcame the stroke without any paralysis, I was never paralyzed; though I believe my brain is still going through the healing process. I know that from the way my right cerebral cortex is perceiving objects, and other brain functions. The only way to treat a stroke is with physiotherapy & blood…

Jennifer, a person can suffer a stroke without having any symptoms as you quoted! And I can confirm that as a recent victim of a stroke!
Last November, 9th 2022 or there about; I was awaken by the ringing of my telephone in my bedroom; I rolled over and picked it up.
Hello I said; no one on the other end: I decided to roll out of bed and go into the bathroom only to find myself disoriented and confused, and practically blind! I stumbled into the bathroom, bouncing from wall to wall: I will not disclose what happened before my wife returned, clean me up and took me out of there.
Two days, prior I was in the hospital where I under went a procedure in my heart; I believe from the surgery my body was stressed out and cause the stroke.
These are also symptoms of a stroke.
As different parts of brain control different parts of the body, symptoms will depend on the part of brain affected:
    The main symptoms are:
Paralysis or numbness or inability to move parts of The face, arm, or…
