Malcolm-Jamal Warner, beloved by millions for his role as Theo Huxtable on the groundbreaking sitcom The Cosby Show, has died at age 54. Warner drowned during a family vacation in Costa Rica, People magazine reported Monday.

Warner’s career began in his teens when he was handpicked by Bill Cosby to portray the only son in the Huxtable family. The show, which aired from 1984 to 1992, became a cultural touchstone and helped redefine the representation of Black families on television. Warner’s portrayal of Theo resonated across generations and became his most iconic role.

In later years, Warner continued to build a diverse acting résumé, with appearances in gritty dramas like Sons of Anarchy and the acclaimed series The People v. O.J. Simpson. His ability to transition between genres reflected a mature and evolving artistry.

Beyond acting, Warner became a voice for cultural commentary. In 2015, amidst controversy surrounding Bill Cosby, Warner emphasized the significance of The Cosby Show in combating racial stereotypes. “No matter what … negative stereotypes of people of color, we’ve always had The Cosby Show to hold up against that,” he said, lamenting its loss from the cultural landscape.

Most recently, Warner co-hosted the podcast Not All Hood, alongside Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley. The show explored the complex identities and lived experiences of Black Americans, a theme Warner championed throughout his life.

His death marks a tragic loss to television history, to fans, and to ongoing conversations about culture, race, and representation.
