The iconic 1975 production of STREAK, a celebrated work by the legendary Alwin Bully, will be revived in celebration of the Golden (50th) anniversary of this historic play. The re-staging, a collaboration between The Alwin Bully Foundation, La Cour des Arts de la Dominique, and Kaz Kweyol productions, will occur during the 2025 Independence festivities and will also serve as a tribute to the late Dr. Alwin Bully’s birthday in November.
In advance of these golden jubilee events, the organizers have issued a press release announcing a preliminary soft launch of the play. This event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, at the Ka Tai Restaurant in Roseau beginning at 6:30 PM. During this gathering, Dr. Lennox Honychurch will deliver a keynote address exploring STREAK’s significance and influence both in 1974 and in contemporary times.
Originally penned and directed by the renowned Dominican playwright and theatrical visionary, Dr. Alwin Bully, STREAK debuted at St. Gerard’s Hall in Roseau in 1975. It was later presented on tour, establishing itself as a cornerstone of Dominican theatre, as well as other productions including in St Lucia and Barbados.
This production marked the first major theatrical endeavor created and directed by Dr. Bully and was performed by his renowned troupe, the People’s Action Theatre (PAT). Over the years, it contributed to the extensive list of theatrical achievements by Dr. Bully and his company, spanning multiple decades.
STREAK offers a poignant social reflection on events of 1974, and the surrounding reactions, shared the organizers. Like many of Bully’s works from that era, it showcases his talent for addressing pressing social themes of the time, employing creativity and artistry to stir deep emotional responses. His ability to analyze social and political issues through compelling storytelling captivated audiences with his exceptional theatrical craftsmanship. Set in mid-1970s Dominica, the play is a romantic comedy that tackles key societal concerns of the period, delivering its messages with humor and joy, engaging viewers in both laughter and reflection.
Direction will be handled by Severin McKenzie, a member of PAT and ABF, with support from Curtis Clarendon of La Cour des Arts. Mrs. Anita Bully and Ms. Gloria Augustus will serve as executive producers. The technical team comprises veteran professionals from these organizations, uniting experienced talents from Dominica’s vibrant theatre and cultural community.
As part of the preparations for this special production, the producers are issuing a call for individuals interested in auditioning for roles. Those eager to participate are encouraged to contact either the Alwin Bully Foundation Inc. or La Cour des Arts de la Dominique Inc.
STREAK promises to be an engaging showcase of talent, blending drama, music, and dance to celebrate the richness of Dominican culture. Organizers say that audiences can expect an unforgettable experience that honors Bully’s visionary contributions to theatre while nurturing a renewed appreciation for the arts.
“Join us for this momentous celebration and be part of a legacy that continues to inspire and elevate the world of
theatre,” stated the release.
