Antigua and Barbuda pushes for direct air routes to Africa ahead of Africa-CARICOM Summit

Hon. Gaston Browne (center), with colleagues at CARICOM ular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, articulated the significant opportunities for enhanced collaboration and economic ties between the two regions.

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is actively advocating for the creation of direct air routes linking the Caribbean to Africa, highlighting the importance of this initiative ahead of the upcoming Second Africa-CARICOM Summit, set for September 7, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Browne pointed out, “The potential for deepening trade, e-commerce, agriculture, and sports collaborations with Africa is substantial. Establishing direct air connections is crucial for unlocking these opportunities.” He reiterated that improved air connectivity is vital for fostering economic growth, cultural exchange, and personal connections between communities.

Reflecting on Antigua and Barbuda’s previous attempts to initiate direct flights in partnership with Air Peace, which encountered operational hurdles, he emphasized the need for better management in future efforts. “It’s essential that any new initiatives to connect the Caribbean and Africa are well-planned and supported collectively to mitigate risks effectively,” Browne warned.

To achieve this goal, he proposed a collaborative investment strategy involving both public and private sectors to procure or lease a minimum of two wide-body aircraft. This would ensure regular passenger and cargo services between the Caribbean and Africa.

“This effort transcends economic needs; it is also a matter of historical and cultural significance. We must invest in the infrastructure that unites our peoples, strengthening the transatlantic partnership grounded in shared heritage and a commitment to mutual improvement,” he concluded.

Antigua and Barbuda is determined to lead this initiative as the Africa-CARICOM Summit approaches, emphasizing regional air connectivity as a fundamental pillar for future collaborations with Africa.
