ANTIGUA: Woman with Dominican parents sentenced to 27 years in prison for manslaughter

Brittany Jnobaptiste(L) sentenced to 27 years for manslaughter, in killing of Wendy Jane Finch

Brittany Jnobaptiste, a young woman whose mother is from Dominica, has been sentenced to 27 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

24-year-old Jnobaptiste, who resides in Antigua and Barbuda, killed Wendy Jane Finch in 2021. Finch was 66 years old.

The court heard that Jnobaptiste was in a cannabis-induced psychotic state at the time of the killing.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility after initially facing murder charges for the October 2021 killing in Finch’s Piccadilly home.

The court ordered a possible review of the sentence after 25 years and directed that the 1,270 days Jnobaptiste spent on remand be deducted from her prison term.

Justice Tunde Bakre acknowledged her mental health struggles but highlighted the severity of the crime. The 24-year-old will remain under psychiatric care.

Defense attorney Wendel Alexander immediately informed the court of his intention to appeal the sentence, though specific grounds for the appeal were not stated.
