UPDATE: Former Antigua and Barbuda ambassador responds to allegations, asserts voluntary resignation

Editor’s note: A response, refuting the allegations, issued by Mr Latour’s legal counsel has been attached to the article. As with any case, the presumption is one of innocence until proven guilty

The government of Antigua and Barbuda, under the leadership of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, has taken the decisive step of revoking the appointment of Boris Latour as ambassador.

This action comes in the wake of serious allegations surrounding Latour, with reports emerging from European authorities indicating that he is under investigation for a range of illegal activities, particularly in Switzerland.

While the government has yet to confirm the validity of these allegations, in an interview, Browne articulated a strong commitment to safeguarding the integrity and reputation of Antigua and Barbuda on the global stage.

He described the revocation of Latour’s appointment as a precautionary measure, reflecting the administration’s prioritization of national interests over individual reputations.

Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining ethical standards among diplomatic representatives. The heightened scrutiny of Latour follows troubling media reports suggesting his involvement in organized criminal behavior, including a suspicious incident where he allegedly orchestrated a burglary of his father’s assets.

As the situation unfolds, it has attracted significant media attention, drawing focus to intricate details surrounding the case, including the reported involvement of recruited criminals and financial disputes.

One notable twist in the story is the reported recent arrest of an accomplice in France, who is now set to face trial, potentially shedding more light on the allegations against Latour.

In response to the accusations, Latour has publicly defended himself, claiming the controversy is rooted in a personal vendetta from his father and vowing to pursue legal action against those he believes are attempting to tarnish his reputation.

His record as Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva and other diplomatic roles across France and UNESCO adds complexity to the narrative, as the inquiry raises questions about the impact on Antigua and Barbuda’s diplomatic standing.

The unfolding saga not only puts a spotlight on individual actions but also challenges the broader diplomatic mission of small nations navigating accusations that could have significant ramifications on their international relations.

As the investigation progresses, all eyes will remain on both Latour’s legal battle and the government’s reported efforts to uphold the standards of conduct expected of its representatives.

LaTour responds

Below is the statement issued in response to the allegations by Mr. Latour’s team, sent by a Mr Latour’s legal counsel.

The Ambassador has voluntarily resigned—he has not been dismissed—so that he may demonstrate his innocence. Mr. Latour is an honorable individual, a highly successful entrepreneur, and a distinguished diplomat, who is clearly the victim of a malicious conspiracy intended to undermine his reputation and integrity.

He categorically denies the spurious allegations set forth in the media. This misinformation campaign, motivated by malice, represents a deliberate and longstanding attempt to tarnish his name. These claims, entirely baseless and clearly aimed at discrediting him, are firmly rejected as “fake news.” All legal avenues will be pursued to defend his rights and preserve his honor.

Furthermore, the presumption of innocence must be maintained, and any concerted effort to sully a reputation should not go unpunished. The future will confirm that Mr. Latour bears no responsibility for these fallacious accusations. We also remind everyone that, from an ethical standpoint, it is important to moderate accusations and verify facts before disseminating potentially harmful information.
