Antiguan man pleads guilty to incest and impregnating daughter

Some grim news is coming from neighboring island Antigua and Barbuda after a father pleaded guilty to several counts of incest and impregnating his daughter.

The defendant, a 51-year-old man, pleaded guilty to four counts of incest, confessing to engaging in sexual acts with his daughter on multiple occasions between 2014 and 2015.

In listening to the case, the judge presiding over the matter, Justice Ann-Marie Smith, expressed her shock, stating that this was the most appalling case she had ever encountered.

These incidents occurred while the daughter was still a minor, resulting in her becoming pregnant at the age of 15.

According to reports in the Daily Observer in St Johns, initially, in March 2023, the defendant vehemently denied the charges, leading to the commencement of his trial on Tuesday, where he appeared without legal representation.

During the trial, the victim bravely testified about the daily abuse she had endured from her father since childhood.

However, a significant turning point occurred when Attorney Wendel Alexander decided to represent the defendant pro bono. After considering the attorney’s advice, the defendant changed his plea, ultimately leading the jury to deliver a guilty verdict.

During her testimony on Tuesday, the now 25-year-old victim revealed that she had reported the sexual abuse to her school counselor when she was approximately 11 years old, prompting police intervention.

She provided a witness statement and was subsequently removed from her home for her safety.

Tragically, before her departure, her father coerced her into writing a false letter accusing the counselor of fabricating the abuse allegations. Against her will, she complied with her father’s demands and was forced to endure ongoing sexual assault in the abusive environment.

In June 2014, the defendant returned home heavily intoxicated and engaged in sexual intercourse with his daughter outside the house in an area that was still under construction. This horrifying act further exemplifies the extent of the abuse inflicted upon the victim.

In December of the following year, it was confirmed that the victim was pregnant.

She knew that the child was her father’s, as he was the only person she had engaged in sexual activities with. The abuse did not stop during her pregnancy, as the man continued to have sexual relations with her.

Shortly after the baby was born, before the six-week recovery period, the defendant had sexual intercourse with his daughter again, worsening her postpartum bleeding.

About six months after giving birth, she reached out to her welfare officer, leading to her removal from the home and placement in a safe environment for both her and the baby.

The defendant was first arrested in 2015, but the case was never fully brought to court. It wasn’t until 2021 that he was rearrested and officially charged after the victim took legal action against him for child support.

Following his guilty plea yesterday, the man’s bail was revoked, and he is now in custody at His Majesty’s Prison awaiting sentencing on May 10.

Public castration would send a clear message. These acts are more common than not. Victim help and support is paramount or the cycle continues.

This news/story has highly insulted me as a man; calling this Peeg a man! This creature deserves never to see the light of day anymore. If he does, then the judge in this case is no different. What a world! Oh Lord Jesus come quickly there’s too much evil and suffering down here.

Awah..that is madness!!..so if she hadn’t taken action against him for child support nothing would have happened?..arrested in 2015 and nothing until 2021/2024?..
Sadly, Dominica isn’t the only island in our beautiful Caribbean with a “justice system” in drastic need of an immediate overhaul.
And sadly, Dominica isn’t the only island where these sick individuals dwell amongst us.
May God protect our children..but social services really need to do more.
