New Year’s message from Antonia Samuel DOMDA President

Today, at the dawn of a new year, 2025, we, The Dominica Diabetes Association Technical Team come together to honor strength, resilience, and determination — qualities that both those living with diabetes and their caretakers embody every single day. It’s not an easy journey, but it is one that you face with unmatched courage.

To those who live with diabetes: We want to remind you that — you are not defined by your condition. Diabetes does not determine your worth, your capabilities, or your potential. It is a challenge, yes, but it is also something that you meet head-on with grit and grace. Keep on making choices that prioritize your health and well-being. You are warriors in a battle that many don’t see, keep on fighting with everything you’ve got. You manage life’s varied dynamics and the mental load that comes with it all — all while keeping a smile on your face, pushing through the tough moments, and thriving in the face of adversity. You are not only surviving; you are living, thriving, and proving that your spirit cannot be drowned or broken.

To the family members and caretakers, the unsung heroes, The Dominica Diabetes Association wants to acknowledge you as well. Your love, patience, unwavering sacrifice and commitment make all the difference in the world. You are the silent force that helps carry the weight of the burden, often with little recognition and sometimes ingratitude but you do what you do with so much heart. You advocate, you support, and you remind those you care for that they are not alone. You keep the light shining when the road feels too long, and you help make the path forward a little brighter.

Diabetes is something that can be managed, and no one has to do it in isolation. The Dominca Diabetes Association is Here! There are doctors, educators, nutritionists, friends, family, and support networks ready to walk alongside you, each step of the way. For those who may feel overwhelmed by the challenges that come with diabetes, I want you to know: you are not alone in this struggle. The moments of frustration, of doubt, are real — but they do not define you. You are more than your struggles. You are more than the numbers on a test result. You are more than the moments when things don’t go as planned and you feel shattered in innumerable many pieces and places.

So, let’s celebrate the victories, no matter how small they may seem. Each step forward, each choice that leads you toward better health, is a victory. You are building a life, a future, despite diabetes — and that is nothing short of incredible. Together, we can continue to push forward. We can continue to educate, to empower, and to break the barriers that come with this condition. Let’s lift each other up, raise awareness, share resources, share hope, and share the unwavering belief that by the grace of God, we are capable of achieving anything, no matter the challenges we face.

So, to our diabetics, their families, caretakers and our partners: Keep fighting. Keep supporting. Keep loving. Keep believing. You are extraordinary, and together, empowered and united against diabetes we are unstoppable!

Be Active! Be Healthy! Be Happy!

Thank you.

Since poorly controlled diabetes can lead to serious problems, linking motivational messages with practical information about managing the disease will increase effectiveness.
