Aspire, women’s advocacy group, responds to UN recommendations on Dominica’s Human Rights

On November 13, 2024, the Working Group of the United Nations Human Rights Council unveiled its report detailing a series of recommendations aimed at improving human rights in Dominica, cataloged under document number A/HRC/58/10. This report highlights various actions that the Dominican government is encouraged to consider, ranging from the abolition of the death penalty to measures addressing torture, enhancing civil rights, combating discrimination, advancing educational opportunities, and bolstering resilience against climate change.

Among the highlights of the UN report, regional women’s health advocacy group Aspire,  expressed particular enthusiasm regarding its unambiguous stance on decriminalizing abortion. Specifically, the report’s paragraphs 6.106 and 6.107 advocate for the complete decriminalization of abortion, stating, “Decriminalize abortion under all circumstances and remove all restrictions to access to safe abortion services,” and further asserting that abortion access should be decriminalized in cases of rape, incest, severe fetal impairments, and when a woman’s physical or mental health is endangered, in accordance with international human rights standards.

Governmental response to these suggestions will be crucial, as it reflects the Commonwealth’s commitment to human rights. The role of civil society becomes increasingly significant in this context, as advocates work to champion the priorities they view as essential, while others may voice differing opinions. This dynamic exemplifies the democratic process at work.

Since they coincide with the upcoming deliberations of the High Court regarding a constitutional challenge to Dominica’s current abortion laws, the timing of these recommendations is noteworthy. Aspire, via statement, conveyed optimism that these recommendations will be received positively and lead to meaningful discussions surrounding women’s rights and reproductive health in the country.

I don’t see the need to have abortion as a criminal offense when murder is already a crime. It makes people think that there is a distinction between the two. That’s why we are even at this point where people are considering this disgusting offense against humanity to be a “right”. You all can have all the “rights” you want in the corrupt world of man but every woman that kill that child in her womb will have to answer before almighty jah. Some of them already suffering mentally once they realize what they have done. A lot of them regret it throughout their entire life but a lot will have to pay for it for eternity

Are you serious? Now they want the right to kill their babies too? What’s next, they will want the ability to kill their husbands next? And their grown children?

Ignoring morality, like they want to do here, is never a good thing. First of all infanticide is just simply wrong, even if you call it abortion. Secondly it opens up a pandora’s box, because if government sets morality aside in this case, what’s to prevent it from setting it aside in other cases? We all would be in danger.

We must stick to moral principle, otherwise we become like animals. Selah.
