Beryl’s impact causes temporary halt to ferry operations

Ferry terminal, damaged by Hurricane Beryl

Despite being spared from the direct impact of Hurricane Beryl, the seas in Dominica remain extremely turbulent, leading to the cessation of ferry travel operations. Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard suffered a crucial blast, resulting in severe damage to the road and sidewalks from the encroaching sea.

Hans Victor, the Operations Manager at Express Des Iles, informed DNO that operations are expected to resume by Thursday, July 4, once sea conditions improve. Victor stated, “I just received word that [Wednesday] will also be canceled because we do not believe sea conditions will improve by then. So, our services are on hold for Dominica.”

He continued on a positive note, saying, “The possibilities are that, should sea conditions subside, on Thursday morning, we will resume with two trips: one from the North all the way to the South and back. Hopefully, that works out, and we will resume the schedule by Friday.”

Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Grenada on Monday, July 1, at around 6:00 P.M. as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds up to 155mph, soon intensifying to Category 5. Although not directly in its path, the southern end of Dominica was heavily impacted by tropical storm conditions namely heavy winds, and high rainfall, posing a dangerous threat to coastline residents and those in areas prone to landslides.

So much debris in the sea it was very risky but 3 day cessation was being cautious. Ferry back in service without a new Ferry terminal.

Here’s to climate resilience. This government is so full if sh*t. We should have a protected harbour for the ferry and proper sea defenses by now but instead we’re building cable cars and entertainment venues.

@Martin, I was thinking the same thing! Looking at the dire state of our roads, bridges and ports, I was asking myself where is the resilience and all that money spent by CREED. We did not even get hit, a little rainfall and the country shuts down because it is so vulnerable! Where is the resilience? No river walls built. Bayfront floods with every swelling sea! Coulibistrie floods over and over with every rainfall and is ignored by the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica every time! The entire West Coast road from Portsmouth to Scotts Head needs rehabilitation and widening, it is a death trap every hurricane season with some of our hanging cliffs!

Ah yes, you are proud t show your ignirance. You could have done a Google search on the term “resilience” and spared yourself, your family, and your past teachers the embarrassment, but instead, you chose to proudly tell the world that you are a…ah well… Resilience does NOT mean that floods and sea swells will not come.

Did you say that the “entire West Coast road from Portsmouth to Scotts Head needs rehabilitation?” When last did you drive to/from Portsmouth and Roseau?
