Bishop Rev. Kendrick Forbes on World Marriage Day: Marriage is a ‘vocation’

Bishop of Roseau Reverend Kendrick Forbes

Bishop of the Diocese of Roseau, Reverend Kendrick Forbes, recently expressed that marriage is the foundation of the domestic church, in which families are built.

He was speaking during the World Marriage Day celebration held at the St Joseph Roman Catholic Church on Sunday.

“Marriage, as you know, is about a man and a woman committing themselves to each other in total self-giving, in fidelity, in courageous trust and hope and in openness to being co-creators with God,  in the bringing of new life into the world,” he said. “Marriage is the foundation of the domestic church, it’s the basis on which families are built. Society is founded.”

According to him, the family has a mission so vital that humanity either stands or falls by it.

“The church uses some very lofty language when she speaks of marriage,” he stated.

He continued, “The Second Vatican Council refers to marriage as an intimate partnership of life and love.  The mutual giving of two persons.  A love which abides faithfully in prosperity and adversity.  An indissoluble covenant.”

Bishop Forbes added, “It’s a vocation one is called to. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us: The vocation of marriage is written into the very nature of man and woman.”

World Marriage Day is an annual celebration on the second Sunday in February.

The celebration is seen as an opportunity to honor couples, the foundation of the family, and the basic unit of society. It also celebrates the “beauty of fidelity, sacrifice, and joy in their daily married life.”
