US President Joe Biden has announced that he is dropping out of the race for the White House saying it was in the best interest of the country.
Biden has been under pressure for weeks from his fellow Democrats to step down following his disastrous debate performance with his opponent, Donald Trump in June.
In a statement released on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday, the President said he will now focus on fulfilling his duty for the rest of his term.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” the statement said quoting Biden. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
Biden said he will address the nation later in the week on the matter.
It was a remarkable U-turn for Biden, 81, who, despite the pressure from his fellow Democrats, had initially remained unfazed.
“I am running and gonna win again,” Biden said July 5 at a rally with supporters in Madison, Wisconsin. “They’re trying to push me out of the race. Well let me say this as clearly as I can: I’m staying in the race. I’ll beat Donald Trump.”
However, polls began to show that support for Biden was faltering. Many Americans questioned his health and mental state.
Also, top Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, had called on him to step aside
Representative Adam B. Schiff of Burbank became one of the most prominent Democrats in Congress to call on Biden to make way for a new candidate.
“A second Trump presidency will undermine the very foundation of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the president can defeat Donald Trump in November,” Schiff said last Wednesday.
In his statement, Biden touted his administration’s accomplishments over the past three and a half years.
“Together, we overcame a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’ve protected and preserved our Democracy. And we’ve revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world,” he said.
He also thanked Vice-president Kamala Harris, calling her “an extraordinary partner in this work.”
As black as I am I surely will not be voting for Kamala Harris and what she stands for. I won’t vote for Trump unless this braggart changes. I pray something will be different by November. God help us.
