Canadian expat receives posthumous commemorative plaque from Dominica State College

On April 7, 2025, the Dominica State College (DSC) honored the memory of Luther Kosowan, a committed craftsman, mentor, and significant contributor to the college, by revealing a commemorative plaque in the Carpentry Workshop—a facility he helped establish and improve.

The Phi Beta MIU website states that Kosowan was originally from Alberta, Canada, and moved to Dominica after his retirement with his wife Ruth. He became actively involved in youth development in Dominica in various ways, including music training and hands-on projects.

The plaque was presented during a special ceremony that was attended by faculty, students, Mr. Kosowan’s wife, Ruth Kosowan, and supportive friends, serving as a lasting tribute to his dedication, expertise, and generosity.

According to a release by DSC Marketing & Communications Officer Kimberly Benjamin, Mr. Kosowan’s affiliation with DSC commenced in 2013, during which time he was instrumental in enhancing the college’s Carpentry and Maintenance programs for over ten years. His proficiency as a carpenter, welder, and machine repair expert made him an essential part of the institution, where he generously invested his time, abilities, and resources for the benefit of both students and faculty.

Among his numerous contributions, Mr. Kosowan reportedly played a key role in fostering DSC’s partnerships with the Emanuel Foundation in Canada and the Thomas Foundation in the United Kingdom, which helped secure vital tools to improve carpentry training.

The release described his generosity as extending beyond teaching; he crafted classroom whiteboards, conducted repairs on crucial equipment, and labored tirelessly to enhance the overall learning environment at DSC.

The plaque was unveiled at a special ceremony attended by DSC faculty, students, and Mr. Kosowan’s wife, Ruth Kosowan and supportive friends, and serves as a permanent symbol of his dedication, skill, and generosity, stated the release.

During the ceremony, Benjamin emphasized the enduring influence of Mr. Kosowan’s efforts: “Mr. Kosowan may no longer be with us physically, but his contributions will remain woven into the very fabric of our institution. This plaque is a testament to his unwavering commitment, ensuring that future generations of students and faculty will always remember and appreciate his service.”

The unveiling of the plaque  serves  as “a heartfelt tribute to a man whose dedication and craftsmanship have left an indelible mark on DSC.”
