In a significant move, the Canefield Urban Council has announced that it will initiate legal action against all property owners whose Land and House rates remain unpaid. This decision, as shared by a press release from the organization, comes as a result of increasing delinquency in property tax payments, which the Council says it can no longer overlook.
The Council asserts that despite repeated reminders—including notices, invoices, and public announcements—many property owners within the Municipality of Canefield have failed to fulfill their tax obligations. Facing mounting pressures from urgent community needs, it now feels compelled to act decisively in recovering outstanding payments.
The non-payment of these essential taxes has critically impaired the Council’s ability to provide vital services to residents; lack of funds stemming from unpaid property taxes has hindered efforts to address pressing local issues effectively, the statement said.
To combat this situation, the Canefield Urban Council has decided to enforce the provisions outlined in the Collection of Taxes Ordinance Act, Chapter 66:01 of the Revised Laws of Dominica. This legal framework empowers the Council to take serious measures against defaulters, including the potential sale of properties that are in arrears. Furthermore, as stipulated in Section 35 of the same ordinance, the Council reserves the right to prevent individuals in default from leaving the state.
The Council’s statement strongly urges all property owners to take immediate action. Those with outstanding payments are encouraged to visit the Council’s office located at 7th Street, Canefield, to arrange for the settlement of their Land and House rates before the impending deadline of April 30, 2025.
Failure to comply will result in the names of defaulters being forwarded to the Council’s legal representatives who will pursue further action in accordance with the Collection of Taxes Ordinance. The Council has assured residents that its office will remain open during lunch hours to facilitate payments and address any questions or concerns.
As the deadline approaches, the Canefield Urban Council emphasizes that residents should be guided accordingly.
Margaret Doctrove and them. Canefield residents do not pay those people one black cent. Hold this nonsense council to task. Ask them about the Canefield playing field that is no more and is a storage for old equipment and vehicles. Ask them about the state of Donkey Beach, a once beautiful recreational area that is destroyed by the AID bank and those mechanic shops on the beach. Ask them about the Eddie Toulon park that is no more and is now encroached upon my Astaphans. MAKE them act on matters that are relevant to the residents of Canefield. My question is what vital services does the council provide?
What are they doing for the community? When the sun goes down ghost town opens. No rekreation, no where to rest weary feet, yet they want monies.
Canfield is a UWP stronghold, everything UWP goes to dust, because that political party is a cursed party.Remember what they did to Simeon Albert, remember Michael Coipel?
As the number of vagrants is ballooning, the Council is now threatening to sell the properties of those who are delinquent in paying their property taxes.
Most property owners have fallen on hard times as inflation coupled with unemployment soars to never before levels. People can’t even buy adequate food. How do you expect them to wipe out the arrears of property taxes?
The authorities are asking the delinquent to do the impossible. This is like asking
people to squeeze water out of a stone.
Locate the whereabouts of the missing eight billion dollars from the CBI program, use
it to defray the amount of property tax owed by citizens for the next six months,
meanwhile, incentivize the economy.
I encourage the residents and property owners of Canefield to laugh in those people face. If is money those council people want go and talk to Skerrit and Martin Charles of the AID Bank. already most of them is by political affiliation they reach there. The people of Canefield have been misrepresented for decades and is high time the Canefield residents make their demands heard. IF they have none, i can put forward 2. 1. Fix the canefield playing field and have it renovated to allow for the people of Canefield to have a recreational place. 2. Provide an explanation for the encroachment of Astaphans on the Eddie Toulon park that was utilize by the community. 3. Ensure the complete clearing up and rehabilitation of Donkey Beach. If the community council cannot address these matter pay them absolutely NOTHING as they themselves have a responsibility to the residents and voters of Canefield!
Most people are broke, and are living ftom hand to mouth. The legal action may not work. First thing is the stomach, and if you cant take care of it, everything else is unimportant to you.
