CARICOM Reparations Commission heads to UK on advocacy mission

A significant diplomatic visit is on the horizon as the CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) prepares for a strategic advocacy mission to the United Kingdom.

From November 17 to 20, 2025, the six-member delegation will reportedly engage in discussions aimed at advancing reparatory justice initiatives.

“The delegation’s mission is to strengthen strategic partnerships and promote a joint programme of public education and engagement on the reparations agenda,” said the release.

The visit, organized in partnership with the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, will include meetings and events designed to promote its cause.

The delegation will be led by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Chairman of the CRC, and will include key representatives such as Mr. Eric Phillips, Vice Chair of the CRC and head of the Guyana Reparations Committee; Ambassador David Comissiong, CARICOM’s ambassador and Vice Chair of Barbados’ Reparations Task Force; Dr. Niambi Hall Campbell Dean, chair of the Bahamas National Reparations Committee; Arley Gill, head of Grenada’s Reparations Committee; and Dr. Hilary Brown, Programme Manager for Culture and Community Development at the CARICOM Secretariat.

When will these wishful thinkers and stargazers snap back to reality and realize that the reparations ship has been grounded?

Admittedly, I was one of the hopefuls who dreamed that the colonizers and exploiters would eventually have an epathany and do the right and righteous thing with regards to reparations; however, I have noticed that whenever the discussion amplifies, the perpetrators become more resolute and hardened in not making amends.

Instead of implementing tangible plans to settle their debts, the would be reparators continue to steadfastly bellow that they did nothing wrong.

When the reparation bells were ringing loudly a decade or so ago, one of the biggest violators began austerity measures to deport Diasporan pensioners who had helped to rebuild and replenish their country after World War II.

Brilliantly expressed! Truth that cannot be disputed!

CARICOM is dysfunctional. The members hardly work in unison for the good of all. Each Head is self-absorbed.

The Heads of CARICOM have a cozy and fawning relationship with King Charles. They show him so much deference. Yet, this is a person who stubbornly refuses even to offer an apology the enslavement and massacre of our ancestors. The present prime minister of the UK, Make Starmer, is of the said mindset.

You cannot be deferential to people who do not even have a modicum of respect for you. To show your disapproval and disgust with the British monarchy with their perplexing and frustrating stance on reparation hold huge protests in the UK, at the UN and other relevant parts of the globe. Reject the offers of the British Royals to visit your countries during their celebration of Commonwealth.
