CARICOM STATISTICS DAY: Secretary General urges unified approach to regional statistics strategy

Caribbean Statistics Day, observed on October 15, 2025, marks a significant milestone as it aligns with the conclusion of the 2024-2025 Year of Statistics in CARICOM. A CARICOM release shared that this special year also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians, underscoring the vital role that data and statistical systems play in fostering development and resilience within the Caribbean Community.

The organization reported that throughout this commemorative period, it has emphasized the importance of establishing consistent standards and harmonizing statistical practices across member states. Notable regional initiatives have been piloted successfully and are now being embedded into routine operations, including the CARICOM Quality Assurance Framework, the CARICOM Code of Good Statistical Practices, and the Generic Statistical Business Process Model. These tools serve to streamline the entire lifecycle of statistical activities, from collection to dissemination.

Currently, CARICOM is midway through implementing a comprehensive twelve-year Regional Strategy for the Development of Statistics. This strategic plan offers a detailed pathway with established mechanisms aimed at strengthening statistical infrastructures and ensuring that policymakers have access to precise and prompt data to guide decisions.

Reportedly, member governments are actively reviewing and enhancing the legal and institutional frameworks that underpin statistical work. They are also working to allocate adequate financial, technical, and human resources to support National Statistical Offices. An increasing focus on digital transformation and modernizing statistical operations is shaping the future of regional data systems, says CARICOM.

Looking forward, the journey of advancing Caribbean statistics remains as vital as the achievements already attained. The spirit of collaboration that defines CARICOM continues to be fundamental.  CARICOM urges that a unified regional approach to developing and improving statistical systems is essential for closing data gaps and elevating standards across the region.

On Caribbean Statistics Day, the Community reaffirms its commitment to bolstering both national and regional statistical processes. The goal remains to deliver timely, accurate data that underpin informed decision-making. In this regard, the organization says that this year’s theme, “Improving Lives through Statistics: Strengthening and Innovating Together,” encapsulates this shared vision for progress.
