In an effort to combat diabetes, the Ministry of Health is in the process of clinical approval for Heberprot-P, a Cuban-manufactured product designed to treat advanced diabetic foot ulcers.
This was according to Health Practitioner Dr. Verna Alfred who presented a statement on behalf of Health Minister Cassanni Laville on World Diabetes Day on Thursday.
“In our efforts to combat diabetes we recognize the need for robust treatment modalities,” she said. “We are in the process of clinical approval of Heberprot-P, a groundbreaking Cuban-manufactured product designed to treat advanced diabetic foot ulcers.”
Additionally, Dr. Alfred said the Ministry of Health is exploring complementary treatments such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy to enhance care for diabetic patients.
She urged the public to embrace healthy lifestyle choices and provide neutral support in the fight against this condition.
Dr. Alfred commended the Dominica Diabetes Association for their unwavering dedication.
“Their tireless work in promoting diabetes awareness and support at the community level is invaluable and deserves our gratitude,” she stated.
She continued, “On behalf of the Ministry of Health we reaffirm our commitment to increase awareness, improve treatment, and promote preventative measures to effectively address the escalating incidents of diabetes.”
The DOMDA started in 1988 and became a member of the International Diabetes Federation in 1994. It was re-enacted in 2008 after many years of inactivity.

Let me inform you four clowns I consider to be equal in intelligence! Where it pertains to diabetic foot ulcers (sours) mild; and some other infections are treated with oral antibiotics, while severe infections require intravenous antibiotics. The duration of treatment is approximately two weeks; nevertheless, longer resolving infections; or osteomyelitis, severe, or persistent infection may require surgical intervention.
Note: Oral antibiotics are appropriate for individuals with mild infection and some moderate infections, whereas intravenous antibiotics are always needed initially for a severe infection, including individuals with osteomyelitis. After the infection improves on intravenous antibiotics, it is reasonable to switch to an oral antibiotic. Oral antibiotics can also be used for osteomyelitis after five to seven days of intravenous coverage if the oral regimen has a high bioavailability.
