Commonwealth governments have rejected a fresh attempt to give the organisation’s secretary-general Baroness Scotland an automatic second term of office, according to the BBC.
In a letter – obtained by the BBC – Boris Johnson says a “significant and diverse number” of heads of government “from across the Commonwealth” opposed the idea of Lady Scotland being reappointed for another four years without facing re-election.
The prime minister – who is the current “chair-in-office” for the Commonwealth – says that he hopes the heads of government can instead agree just to extend Lady Scotland’s contract temporarily until they meet next year.
The 54 heads of government had expected to decide Lady Scotland’s future at their big biennial summit – known as CHOGM – in Rwanda this month but the meeting was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
A Commonwealth Secretariat spokesman said the proposal for automatic reappointment had been made because of the uncertainty of when CHOGM might take place, probably next year.
The simplest metaphor in history goes like this: “A man is known by the company he keeps.”

This is giddy news for me 😃. It represents a rejection of the amoral Baroness. The majority of members of the Commonwealth don’t want her and as such disapprove of her behavior whilst secretary-general of the Secretariat. One million French men can’t be wrong. By extension, the person who sponsored her, Skerritt, is also being rejected. It represents a poor judge of character on his part when he nominated her. Those of us who took umbrage with her “souseh cell” comment aren’t surprised and are rejoicing at this outcome. Isn’t it a shame that she was given an opportunity to make Dominica proud on the international stage and the Baronmess failed miserably. Even her nomination was shrouded in controversy when Skerritt did a slikitty slide on his colleagues. I’m sure they also are happy with the fact that she failed. At the end of the day, the Baroness did it to herself. She got promoted to the level of her incompetence.
You are right that Roosevelt Skerrit also sponsored her candidacy for this second term. However, what does surprise me is that, apparently this was immediately seconded by Barbados and I wonder why? I can only surmise that Ms. Motley owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Roosevelt Skerrit. This has not gone unnoticed and other Commonwealth countries have taken careful note
while maintaining diplomatic silence.

She lost a trial case in April 2018, in which she refused to appear, which cost the secretariat a few hundred thousand pounds and again in Jan. of this year after which Prime Minister Boris Johnson publicly announced he would not be supporting a second stint for her to head the Commonwealth Office as he had lost confidence in her. Patricia Scotland must never forget that the Queen is the head of the Commonwealth and not Patricia, who is only her representative and I am afraid she blotted her copybook badly with Her Majesty.
