Community policing in action at the Convent High School

On Tuesday, January  10, 2026, the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force (CDPF) – Community Oriented Policing Initiative continued its outreach with students of Forms 1-2 and 1-3 at the Convent High School.

According to a statement by the CDPF, the interaction was conducted by School Resource Officer, Ag. Cpl Euley Baptiste, where, in light of the carnival season, students were sensitized on the importance of peer pressure awareness. Emphasis was placed on:

Saying NO to drugs

Refraining from alcohol consumption

Not accepting drinks from strangers

Being vigilant about opened, or uncovered drinks

Avoiding leaving drinks unattended

The statement further said that the session also coincided with the school’s exciting annual activity dubbed “Anything But a Bag,” where students showcased their creativity using items such as pillowcases, strollers, a cooking pot, a drill kit, and other interesting alternatives.

“To create a relaxed and engaging environment, ice breakers were conducted before each session, allowing the students and the officer to become better acquainted and interact freely,” the statement added.

The CDPF says it remains committed to strengthening police-youth relationships and empowering our students to make safe, smart, and responsible choices.

If community policing is to be succeed it must be sustained or on going. An one off session to schools will not suffice.

There should also some serious intersection by the CDPF. They cannot intimidate, stone, teargas, falsely arrest, brutalize peaceful, law abiding protesters and expect the said public to willingly cooperate with them. If they continue along this path, all the effort and work in community policing will to no avail.

The perception that the average Dominican has about the police force (right or wrong) is mostly negative. That must be changed by being fair and do ing things that will project them as defenders of justice and truth at all times. This will help to create and maintain a positive image.

You have to be the change you want to project.

Talking to school children is good, talking to the community is good.Community policing is better when the community can get the service of the police when it is needed.Patrolls in and out of Roseau is the best form of community policing. In Roseau there vehicles parked on sidewalks, preventing the free flow of traffic( pedestrians).Chairs, blocks, wood and reserve parking signs are put on the road without the permission of the police. That is obstruction, and the police do nothing about it,that is NOT community policing. The every Wednesday march by Athie Martin was deemed obstruction.
