Cricket West Indies announces squad for ODI Series against Pakistan

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a 15-member squad for the 50-over leg of the white-ball home series against Pakistan. The series will feature three CG United One-Day Internationals (ODIs) scheduled for August 8, 10, and 12 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad.

The squad includes players who participated in recent home series wins against England and Bangladesh in late 2024, as well as the tour of the United Kingdom earlier in 2025. This series concludes the “Full Ah Energy” home campaign and is part of CWI’s preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been rested for workload management. Romario Shepherd returns to the squad after missing matches against Ireland and England earlier this year.

Head Coach Daren Sammy stated, “Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. While qualifying is our immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success.”

He added, “The upcoming matches against teams like Pakistan, who are ranked higher, provide crucial opportunities to earn valuable ranking points to improve our standing ahead of the World Cup.”

    What we lack in the west indies is consistency.Look at Kraig Braithwaite West Indies #1 test batsman presently,batted 193 times average 32 with 12 centuries.Compare that to Joe Root who batted 288 times average 51 with 39 centuries.A difference of 95 innings and 27 test centuries.Smith,Jaiswal Williamson ang Gill are the same CONSISTENCY.West Indies batsmen have a mental problem 100,25,0,0,1,2,6,4, but the biggest problem is,they continue to be picked even after failing miserably.Batsmen should be picked on averages.Test 6 innings average 25 or more less than that OUT.ODI 5 innings average average 30 or more,less than that OUT,T20i 5 innings average 30 or more, less than that OUT.Top 6 batsmen should be picked on averages. West Indies crickets picks are not threatened so they do not care..

      I totally agree with you that mentally, our batters are poor. I alluded to that in the past. Cricket is a mental game, and if you cannot concentrate for long period, then you wont have a very distinguished career.
      All the averages are poor, and shameful. Only Brathwaite is in the 30’s, and he is our highest ranked TEST batter.
      Imagine that.

    cricket west indies must take a break from all cricket for about three years…mentally these guys are not ready…their new name looks like loose indies….it’s not encouraging to watch them play …..I can’t lost my sleep to watch them again

      @Waste
      Many people are saying the same, but it would just accelerate our decline.
      They just need to concentrate more on our under 15, 17 and 19 more. Spend money on them, give them good coaches, good wickets to bat on, and help them mentally. Cricket is a mental game, and many of our players cant concentrate for long periods.
      Results would be obtained within a 5 years period. But all of us should demand more from Cricket West Indies.

      Waste stop wasting space and time with that ill-advised comment. How does exiting the game for three years help? Competition is practice and practice makes perfect.

      In my honest and most humble opinion we need to recalibrate. Start with grassroots programs – schools, local clubs, community level. Many more regional tournaments. We also need more qualified coaches and better prepared pitches.

      We also must have more cricket on television/ in our homes. This should create more love and interest in the game from our youth population.

      Cricket can reclaim its #1 spot in the Caribbean. However, it will take more wrk and investments.

    Unless nursing an injury, the exclusion of Athanaze who really made the most of his T2I opportunity against Pakistan is mind boggling to say the least.

    The batting lineup does not scare anybody and will definitely struggle to crack 250. The Pakistanis batsmen have had a good look at the West Indian bowlers in the T20I three game set and there is no indication that they will be deeply troubled by anyone except pacer Shamar Joseph.

    In short, the West Indies reclamation and rebuilding project continues!!!

      @Leaping Lizard
      Even with Athanaze, we still lack what you call batters in the Caribbean to scare any team. We have ZERO top notch batters, but just a few talented players like King, Hope, Lewis, Athanaze, etc. Real batters are players like Joe Root, Steve Smith, Harry Brook, Kane Williamson, Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, etc. Those guys can bat, and they are reliable.
      It’s not our players fault though. The Caribbean lack the cricketing infrastructure for young players to succeed.
      Athanaze did better than Shubman Gill as an under 19 player. India had the cricketing infrastructure to nurture his talent. Now he is India’s captain, while Athanaze can’t stamp his authority in Test Cricket. Our Regional 4 day system does not help him, because its POOR, non COMPETITIVE, and he does not play with with top level cricketers.
      Unles Cricket West Indies and all our local boards step up, we will not make progress in our cricket.
      Hope the youngster, Jewel Andrew does well.

        MEME, valid points for sure. Succession planning has never been a strong suit of West Indians whether in cricket or politics.

        The infighting that plagued the old WICB appears to have subsided; however, there is no under estimating the current internal conflict and turmoil at highest level of Cricket West Indies after the decision to make the Darren Sammy All Format coach.

        In short, the West Indies malaise can be summed up in one single saying which you alluded to: A failure to plan is a plan to fail.

          I think that Darren Sammy has too much work. The board needs to give him less responsibilities. Having said that, the players themselves have a responsibility to themselves and we the fans, and it is to perform.
          Unlike many people, i dont blame Sammy only when a player fails. This is unfair. The player has to shoulder some of the blame as well. But our cricket is in crisis.

        BEAUTIFUL COMMENT .
        I fully concur.

      MEME, I agree with your opening paragraph. It is mind-boggling that Athanaze could be excluded not only from the fifteen (15) selected but from the first eleven (11). This is equivalent to baking bread and excluding the yeast.
