The Trump administration is reportedly contemplating new strategies to instigate regime change in Cuba, including the possibility of imposing a comprehensive embargo on the nation’s oil imports.
This is according to Politico, which cited three sources familiar with the proposed plan.
In response, a press release from the Cuban Consular Office indicates that the country’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, publicly condemned the recent disclosures and speculation surrounding these potential measures on Friday.
He described such intentions as a “brutal assault” on a peaceful nation that poses no threat to the United States.
Fernández de Cossío emphasized that these proposed actions serve as undeniable proof that the economic difficulties faced by the Cuban population are primarily the result of policies crafted and enforced by Washington.
The Cuban diplomat also pointed out that prominent figures like current Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former National Security Advisor John Bolton had misled President Trump in 2019, leading him to order a similar blockade. However, this move was ultimately halted by national security agencies that deemed such aggressive confrontation as unjustifiable, irresponsible, and perilous.
Meanwhile, the article quotes one of the sources as saying that, “The effort would be justified under the 1994 LIBERTAD Act, better known as the Helms-Burton Act”.
However, it also revealed that some in the Trump administration are in opposition, citing that “A total blockade of oil imports into Cuba could then spark a humanitarian crisis…”
Fernández de Cossío characterized the resurgence of these threats in 2026 as indicative of a renewed hostile stance aimed at destabilizing Cuba’s energy sector through what he called “international piracy.”
This warning, say Cuban officials, is issued amid broader resistance from the Global South against the unilateral and aggressive policies of the Republican administration.
Trump is hoping that these measures will cause de Cuban citizens to rise up and cause instability in Cuba then he will run as de saving grace with his first action in de energy sector. a rush to influence.
Trump is NOT A HUMANITARIAN.
He matched into Venezuela yet all US leaders have trod carefully with Cuba …………..i guess for good reason.
What the US doing to defenceless countries in the region whom Trump doesn’t like, is against international law and should be condemned by the UN and regional countries as a whole. Trump cannot be allowed to continue to trample on the sovereignty of countries not aligned to US policies and get away with it. His unprovoked attack on Venezuela and the kidnapping of this country’s leader and his wife continue to go unchallenged with regional leaders seemingly too scared to even criticise such unlawful actions. Now the threat of depriving the Cubans of oil needed to sustain their economy, on top of decades long sanctions aimed at crippling their economy, should signal to regional leaders that it is time to take a stand against American hegemony and follow the Europeans lead with regard to threats against Greenland. The only way to beat a bully like TRUMP is to stand up to him as one region with one voice. Bullies like to divide and conquer.
