Culture Minister encourages public to eat more local foods

Market Day with a Difference in Portsmouth- Gretta Roberts addressing ceremony

Minister for Culture Gretta Roberts has encouraged the Dominican public to consume more local foods.

Her call came while addressing Market Day with a Difference in Portsmouth, held recently.

“Market Day with a Difference affords us with the opportunity to celebrate and value our local products and further strengthen an appreciation for all [that] is uniquely ours as Dominicans,” she said. “It reminds us of our continued efforts as a people to support local and to eat what we grow and grow what we eat.”

She believes that by fostering a culture of ” eating what we grow, and growing what we eat, we can all work together to fight against the non-communicable diseases plaguing our nation and improve the health outcomes of our people and our communities.”

Roberts told farmers and vendors that they play an integral role in ensuring that there is always a consistent, reliable supply of safe, nutritious food across Dominica, “and for this we applaud you.”

“It is our hope that Market Day with a Difference, which always seems to find its place in our calendar every year, will serve to motivate our existing farmers to keep cultivating a wide variety of crops…,” she urged. Furthermore, Roberts said it should also serve to encourage young people to invest in agriculture.

It’s a nice idea but what do you expect people to do when imported food is cheaper?

We should plant and eat more local foods and fruits. In fact, because Dominica is blessed with arable soil, an abundance of water sources, and adequate sunshine throughout the year, the country should be self a sufficient in many types of foods and fruits.

Minister Roberts it’s full time to transition from talk to action. Put the policies, strategies and incentives in place to attract and encourage locals to grow much more of what they consume on a daily basis. Provide the incentives (seeds & seedlings) to everyone with yard space who desires to cultivate backyard gardens.

P.S. Change that rat nest you have on your head. Looks grotesque!

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 5 Thumb down 4
