Cricket West Indies (CWI) has expressed acknowledgment and acceptance of an apology from Paul Nixon, Head Coach of the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, along with the Falcons’ management, concerning recent incorrect statements made by Coach Nixon regarding CWI’s management of players’ medical data.

Recently, referring to Barbadian bowling allrounder Justin Greaves’ injury sustained in a match against Pakistan, Nixon is reported as stating, “I’m very disappointed that we’ve had no communication with Cricket West Indies in their backroom department for Greaves to come in to us a bit injured, more than a bit injured. So, that was disappointing.”

He added that there was a lack of communication, describing it as “unproffessional”.

However, two days ago the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons posted a public apology, claiming there was no harm intended and that “Nixon regrets any and all remarks made”, saying that it is committed to a strong collaborative relationship moving forward.

CWI’s statement in response, indicated that the organization appreciates the clarification and the acknowledgment that there was no intention to cause offense or to mislead, and it takes this opportunity to clarify the facts surrounding the matter.

The governing body clarified that their protocols for physiotherapists mandate the submission of comprehensive handover reports to franchise medical teams before any tournament begins. This procedure was properly followed ahead of the 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which started on August 14.

In contrast to Coach Nixon’s initial remarks, after the final One Day International (ODI) against Pakistan on August 12, Dr. Denis Byam, the Lead Physiotherapist for CWI, provided the relevant medical handover documentation to the Leeward Islands franchise—where Justin Greaves is contracted—as well as to the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons’ medical staff.

The documentation included details of Greaves’ cleared status following an MRI conducted on July 20, and also addressed an Achilles injury reported on August 6, which had affected his bowling capacity.

Before entering any tournament, players are supposed to undergo assessments by their franchise’s medical team. Greaves joined the Falcons on August 13, and it was expected that the club’s medical staff would perform an evaluation and organize physiotherapy sessions accordingly.

However, CWI has confirmed that no such assessment was performed, and during the first three weeks of the CPL, Greaves only attended a single physiotherapy session.

Commenting on the issue, CWI CEO Chris Dehring stated:“We take great pride in the professionalism and expertise of our Sports Science and medicine unit, who consistently ensure that player welfare remains the highest priority. Our protocols are designed to protect athletes and enable seamless handovers across all levels of competition.”

Dehring also highlighted the strong partnership between CWI and the CPL: “We also reaffirm the close working relationship shared between CWI and the CPL. The CPL continues to be one of our most important events, energizing cricket across the region and a success story for Cricket West Indies that we support with pride.”

CWI also stated that it looks forward to ongoing collaboration with all CPL franchises, including the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, and remains dedicated to the shared objective of strengthening West Indies cricket’s future.
