Cricket West Indies (CWI) has launched a new initiative focused on advancing the capabilities of regional data analysts as part of its wider strategy to modernize and professionalize cricket across the Caribbean. This development program is being implemented during the ongoing West Indies Breakout League, which began on Friday, April 25, at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, shared a press release from the organization.
The effort is being led by Avenesh Seetaram, Performance Analyst for the West Indies senior men’s team. He is facilitating a comprehensive series of sessions—including workshops, seminars, and real-time match guidance—with six data analysts currently working with the league’s franchise teams. The goal is to raise their proficiency in data analysis, enhance collaboration with team staff, and introduce them to the expectations of high-performance environments at the international level.
The training is designed not only to sharpen individual skills, but also to embed data analysis into team planning and decision-making processes. According to the release, the CWI sees this approach as critical to strengthening the pipeline of skilled professionals and aligning regional cricket with international standards.
CWI Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, emphasized that building technical capacity at all tiers of the game is central to the organization’s long-term vision. The initiative is part of a broader shift toward embedding analytics in cricket operations at every level.

Seetaram underscored the value of introducing data-driven thinking early in an analyst’s career. “Data has become a critical part of the game internationally. The chance to enlighten and expose our next batch of analysts is important because it allows for our players to be involved at this level before they get to the international stage.” He continued, “As the game internationally takes shape, we are preparing ourselves and moulding those at the level below to aid in the transfer of information.”
During the league, Seetaram will provide hands-on mentoring, sitting alongside each analyst during matches to help them apply analytical insights directly into team strategies. He will also participate in pre-match planning sessions to ensure a consistent standard of information sharing across all teams.
“These workshops are designed to upskill analysts and get them to align with best practices in analytics with the aim of broadening the pool of skilled analysts across the region,” Seetaram explained.
“Given that we are embracing a data driven approach to our cricket strategies, the players and coaches will have the opportunity to integrate real time data into their strategies while the matches are in progress,” he concluded.
