CWI celebrates Andre Russell, as he bows out of international cricket

The upcoming T20 series between the West Indies and Australia marks a historic farewell for West Indian cricket fans, as they will have one last chance to see a beloved player don the maroon jersey.

This series will be the final international appearances for Andre Russell, a two-time T20 World Cup champion, who will participate in his concluding two matches on home soil at Sabina Park on July 20 and 22. With a career spanning over 15 years and more than 140 international matches, Russell remains a dynamic and influential figure in West Indies cricket.

According to a CWI statement, the talented Jamaican all-rounder expressed immense pride and gratitude for his time representing the West Indies, describing it as one of the proudest moments of his life.

“Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life. When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realize what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others,” said Russell.

He also highlighted the significance of ending his international journey on familiar grounds, in front of his supporters, emphasizing his love for playing at home with family and friends and his desire to finish his career on a high note while inspiring future Caribbean cricketers.

CWI Head Coach Daren Sammy praised Russell’s contributions, stating, “André has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor. Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come.”

As Russell prepares to step away, he will be succeeded by Matthew Forde for the Warner Park matches, marking the end of an era and the beginning of new opportunities for the West Indies team.

Hope after retirement you don’t stay on the side and criticize like so many others, but you try to help.
    Happy retirement.
