Daniel James replaces Ainsworth Irish as president of Grotto Home

Daniel James

After more than three decades, the Grotto Home for the Homeless, operated by Community Hostels Incorporated, has elected a new leader to its helm. The torch has been passed to a new president, Mr. Daniel James, the Clerk of the House of Assembly and a dedicated Dominican with a strong commitment to philanthropy.

The transition occurred during the organization’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on January 24, 2024. The election saw unanimous support for James, who replaced Ainsworth Irish, who previously held the presidency position, at the facility which has specialized in providing shelter for homeless individuals for the past 33 years.

In an exclusive interview with Dominica News Online (DNO), James shared his vision for the Grotto Home under his leadership. The newly elected president, along with the new board members, consisting of Shannon Bedminister, Gloria Walsh, Ricky Brumant, Yeudi John, Claude Weekes, Yvonne Pemberton, Kennisha Williams, Julia Joseph, aims
to usher in a new era defined by transparency and trust, and one that fosters new partnerships.

Under the theme for the year, “Come partner with us”, James issued a heartfelt call to the entire Dominican community to join hands with the new executive in their efforts to enhance the lives of the 30 residents entrusted to their care.

“We are hopeful that new businesses and individuals with various skill sets can come on board and assist us in achieving some of our goals,” he conveyed to DNO. James emphasized the importance of collaboration from professionals such as bakers, hair stylists, barbers, plumbers, electricians, and pharmacists, as their diverse skills are
needed to address the varying needs of the residents. He stressed that no act of assistance is too small.

The newly appointed president assured the public that there is a place for everyone to contribute, and the new board is open to suggestions. He further pledged to uphold the constitution with regular Annual General Meetings, ensuring transparency, accountability, and frequent reporting to stakeholders and the general public.

Another goal outlined for their three-year term, as stated by James, is to ensure that each resident of the home feels valued and that their dignity is upheld.

“They once played a valuable role in society, and something happened along the way to bring them here. Regardless of their current circumstances, we aim to provide them with a good and comfortable quality of life,” he declared.

Expressing his deepest gratitude to those who supported the facility in the previous year, he placed on record his hopes for continued partnerships in the new year and beyond. The executive members will convene on January 30, 2024, to elect a Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary, as mandated by the constitution.

Personally, I don’t trust those flowery and empty word. Dominica isn’t a place you should trust anything that comes across as transparency. Yet. may God speak in thir hearts to do what is just for the residents,
