President of the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT), Mervin Alexander, has announced that members of the association will receive an 8 percent increase for the triennium 2024-2027.
“The Dominica Association of Teachers is pleased to announce the completion of negotiations with the Government of Dominica,” he said during a statement. “In terms of salary increases, teachers, like all other government employees, will receive an 8 percent increase for the triennium 2024-2027 as follows.”
He continued, “3 percent for the year 2024-2025, 2 percent for 2025-2026, and 3 percent from 2026-2027.”
Alexander added that all the significant benefits agreed upon are as follows; “principals at government secondary schools are now recognized as traveling officers. They will receive an allowance of $870.00 monthly in addition to mileage claims when traveling on school business.”
He mentioned that the term unqualified teachers will no longer be used as an established post for teachers.
“The new nomenclature will be teacher one and teacher two,” Alexander stated.
In the meantime, Alexander revealed that effective September 1, all teachers under the non-established capacity termed program will transition into established positions.
“There were teachers engaged in a non-established capacity termed program requirement for a number of years,” he noted. “Effective September 1, all teachers who were previously under this program will transition into established positions.”
He went on to state that to assist teachers with the procurement of small supplies of materials and learning aid, the government has agreed to grant teachers the sum of $250 annually.
“With regards to the long-awaited revision of the primary school’s structure, the government has agreed to embark upon a review and restructure of the primary schools by January 2026,” Alexander indicated. “The government provides a bridge pension for teachers who retire from the public service at age 60 until their 65th birthday.”
Moreover, he said, on the attainment of their 65th birthday, if the social security payment is less than what the government is paying, the government has agreed to pay the difference to the officers.
Mr. Alexander says teachers who did not benefit following the reclassification exercise conducted in 2023 could also receive a one-off payment of 50 percent of their salary.
excellent. when should teachers expect to see a change in their salaries?
Nice, nice, So they will get a “backpay” cheque for the previous year in addition to other goodies. This is a great deal for teachers. I am sure they would want a 100% increase, but… all things considered, this is great news.
Congrats, DAT!
Well deserve increase for our teachers. Long long long overdue. Be grate full for this increase but let not be fooled into voting for this government in this up coming snap election.
Accept it all because you deserve it but also open alu eyes to see the ploy at play. It’s a strategy to have you fooled into voting for the regime. It’s one of may cards being played. Don’t be played any long by this government.
