
Dominica Broadcasting Corporation (DBS) has unveiled the new name of its national reading competition dubbed, “the DBS Radio Felix Henderson National Reading Competition.”
Coordinator Kirshena Joseph shared the details while addressing the official launching ceremony of this year’s competition held at the at the UWI Global Campus Auditorium on Tuesday.
The contest was the brainchild of the late iconic broadcaster and Creole legend Felix Henderson.
“Today marks a significant milestone for this cherished competition as we officially unveil its new name, the DBS Radio Felix Henderson National Reading Competition,” Joseph said. “This renaming is a fitting tribute to the late Felix Henderson whose contribution to literacy and culture [has] left an indelible mark on Dominica.”
According to her, Mr. Henderson was not only instrumental in nurturing this initiative but also inspired generations through his passion for reading and storytelling.
“This competition has long been a beacon for promoting reading among our youth, fostering critical skills, such as comprehension, fluency, and creativity,” Joseph stated.
She continued, “Literacy is more than just an academic skill, it is a gateway to opportunity, empowerment, and social mobility.”
By engaging students in friendly competitions, Joseph noted that not only will their reading habits be cultivated, but also their confidence and love for learning.
Moreover, she pointed out that the introduction of calypso into this year’s theme further enriches the experience, “by connecting literacy with our vibrant cultural tradition.”
“Calypso storytelling aligns seamlessly with the art of reading, encouraging children to explore narratives that reflect their identity while broadening their horizons,” Joseph said.

Meanwhile, Assistant Chief Education Officer Nadia Ferrol said this event is more than just a competition, “ it is a powerful platform that nurtures literacy, language appreciation and intellectual growth among our young leaders.”
She described the late Felix Henderson as a true icon of Dominican culture and communication, noting that it is only fitting that his legacy continues to inspire a new generation of readers and storytellers.
“His passion for the spoken and written words resonates in this initiative, reminding us of the value of language as a tool for empowerment and self-expression,” Ferrol noted.
She went on to state that the Ministry of Education is proud to support this competition, recognizing that literacy is the cornerstone of education and a key driver to national development.
“Through reading our students expand their knowledge, enhance their creativity, and develop the critical thinking skills necessary to navigate an ever-evolving world,” she asserted.
The theme for this year’s reading competition is, “Reading and Calypso.”
