The Dominica Co-operative Societies League Ltd (DCSLL) has recently awarded scholarships and bursaries to 13 deserving students during a ceremony held at the Prevo Cinemall Conference Room.

This year’s ceremony recognized three outstanding young scholars who have been awarded the Sister Alicia Scholarship for Need, the Joffre Robinson Scholarship for Merit, and the Valentine Telemaque Scholarship for Leadership. In addition, 10 bursaries were awarded to other students for their secondary school education.

“I would like to tell you awardees that you have shown the potential, and now the hard work begins,”  Chairman of the Education Committee of the DCSLL, Bernard Pacquette told scholarship recipients. “You will no doubt face some challenges as you move forward in your education. You will at some point suffer some failure. That’s inevitable. But how you move and how you behave after that will determine how successful you are.”

According to him,  in other words, “when you fall, like I told graduating students at the state college some time ago, that when you fall, do not look back to see who see you fall and for them to say alas see where the child fall, no, you get up, you brush your knees and you move on.”

He further told students that it’s up to them to make the best of this scholarship.

Meanwhile, President of the DCSLL, Attorney Arthlyn Nesty, told recipients that to be chosen means that they have shown qualities that go beyond grades.

“We are not only awarding scholarships and bursaries, we are celebrating you, your potential, your hard work, and your bright future that lies ahead with each and every one of you,” she said.

She continued, “To be chosen means you have shown qualities that go beyond grades, it means that you have demonstrated commitment, discipline, and a spirit that reflects what these awards stand for.”

Nesty stated further that these scholarships and bursaries are not just about financial assistance and money, “it is a vote of confidence in you, it is the cooperative movement saying, we believe in you, we see your potential and we are standing behind you.”

The Dominica Cooperative Societies League Limited states that it has been “a cornerstone of the cooperative movement in Dominica since 1957”. It functions as the central authority overseeing cooperative societies throughout the island,  providing various resources such as skill development programs, policy representation, consultancy, and funding assistance. Dedicated to fostering a conducive environment for their growth and success, the organization aims to enhance the quality of life and economic stability of its members. The organization’s activities encompass essential sectors including, “educational initiatives,  education, regulatory advocacy, and financial services innovation.”
