The Discover Dominica Authority today unveiled several significant updates during a press briefing held at the 43rd Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) Marketplace 2025 event in Antigua. These developments highlight the island’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable development and improve visitor access shared the DDA via press release.
Marva Williams, CEO of the Discover Dominica Authority, announced that the island’s innovative cable car project, recognized as the longest detachable cable car globally at 6.6 kilometers, is scheduled to commence operations in December 2025. This new transportation link will connect the Roseau Valley directly to the renowned Boiling Lake in approximately 20 minutes, significantly reducing the current six-hour trek to a more accessible rainforest experience. The project has already created over 450 construction jobs and is expected to support more than 150 permanent employment opportunities.
Furthermore, Williams provided updates on increased flight options to Dominica. American Airlines plans to expand its service from Miami starting in August, offering six flights per week. The schedule will then decrease to two flights weekly in September before returning to daily service in October. The airline will further increase to eight weekly flights during November and December, providing a notable enhancement in U.S. connectivity to the island.
Williams emphasized the island’s commitment to sustainable tourism, stating, “Dominica continues to set itself apart in the Caribbean by investing in projects that expand access while preserving what makes the Nature Island so special. We are redefining what it means to be a sustainable and green destination where nature is respected, where communities lead, where innovation fuels resilience, and where every traveler is transformed by the journey.”
Additional updates shared during the event include:
– The upcoming operationalization of a 10-megawatt geothermal power plant, expected to be functional by the end of 2025. This facility will reportedly generate up to 50% of the country’s peak electricity demand, significantly reducing energy costs and lowering carbon emissions.
– The USD $201 million Cabrits Marina project, designed to accommodate vessels up to 150 feet, will feature a marine village offering dining, shopping, and cultural experiences, with a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability.
– The international airport’s development is progressing with 40% of construction completed. The project remains on schedule for completion in 2027, including a 2,850-meter runway and a climate-resilient terminal, which will facilitate direct flights from North America and Europe, greatly increasing the island’s capacity for international visitors.
Williams concluded by stating, “With our upcoming cable car, expanded airlift, and advancements in renewable energy and infrastructure, we are not just building for today, but laying the foundation for a more sustainable, connected, and resilient future for generations to come.”
