As the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, its political leader, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has told supporters that the philosophy of the party is Biblically-based.
He quoted the bible in driving home his point.
“This party is rooted in a philosophy, a principled position that is uncompromising,” he said while addressing a function to launch the anniversary celebrations.
“It is really rooted and is also biblical. You can find it, I believe, in Matthew chapter 25, verses 35 to 40.”
The portion of the Bible mentioned by Skerrit has often been referred to as the “Parable of the Sheep and the Goats.”
It describes Jesus’ epic judgment, to take place when He returns as King with His angels and takes His place on the throne. He will divide those judged into two groups: “sheep” and “goats”.
The sheep will be welcomed and praised for serving those in need. The goats will be sent away from Jesus to eternal fire and condemned for not serving those in need.
Biblical scholars say Jesus used the parable to emphasize the importance of caring for the least of society, including the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, and imprisoned.
According to Skerrit, caring for those in need is what the DLP has been all about.
“That is what the Lord said, these are the questions he will pose to us and this is what the party has been about over the last 70 years – impacting the lives of people, impacting the lives of the less fortunate among us but ensuring that those who need to go up from where they are, you are also given an opportunity to go up further,” he remarked.
He further said during the anniversary celebration, the DLP will recognize its many volunteers.
“Being part of a political party is a voluntary duty,” he said.
“And I must say that the party has been blessed over the last 70 years to have a cadre of supporters and well-wishers who have kept the flame of Labour shining and burning so brightly… And so for me as the current political leader, it is an extraordinary privilege and a humble experience to lead such a political organization.”
The DLP is the oldest political party in Dominica. It was founded in 1955 by Phyllis Shand Allfrey and Emmanuel Christopher Loblack. It won its first general election in 1961 under the leadership of Edward Oliver Leblanc. Under Leblanc, it went on to win the general elections of 1966 and 1970. It also won the election of 1975 under Patrick John, who would become Dominica’s first Prime Minister. The party has also won the general elections of 2005, 2009, 2014, 2019, and 2022 under the leadership of Skerrit.
The 70th anniversary of the party is being celebrated under the theme “A Legacy of Commitment.”

The caption of the article read “DLP Philosophy Based on Scripture’. We missed the point of the article because we did not pay attention to the heading. We just concluded that it was Mr Skerrit ‘s philosophy but that’s not what he said. He did not claim anything. It was all DLP.
To make his point, Mr Skerrit used the parable of Goats and Sheep, a most appropriate parable for the message he was attempting to deliver since many biblical scholars say this parable is used to emphasize the importance of caring for the least amongst us. The PM is of the firm belief that that’s what the DLP has stood for since it’s inception, looking out for those amongst us who need a helping hand and by the way, folks may want you to believe that helping others only takes place in Dominica. WRONG. This is normal practice in developed countries, assisting the needy with housing, groceries, utilities so Dominica is no exception.

I am sure that you’re aware government assistance programs are also available in countries like the UK and Canada, correct? Government programs do not begin and end in America. They are also available in a lot of other countries.
I do not agree with your concept, in trying to interpret a Roosevelt. Fact is Roosevelt made it abundantly clear that the labor party is blessed! So, I asked you, who blessed the labor party, which is a political organization! What is the interpretation and function of the term “ government?” The term government , simply means elected officials who gets what and when! Now if that philosophy was not true, don’t you think there would be less victimization, and fair distribution of the nation resources, than what we see Roosevelt doing by helping those who look up to him like god, while the people who refuse to bow suffer at his hands.

Francisco, you are making a mistake by placing your focus on Mr Skerrit and not on what he said. Mr Skerrit was simply addressing DLP supporters at their 70th anniversary celebration. Anyone in DLP’s leadership could have given those remarks because it was about the history of the DLP but as it’s current leader, he did. He said the DLP was rooted in looking out for the least fortunate amongst us (small guy) and in doing so, he referenced the parable of the Sheep and Goats. Mr Skerrit further stated that the DLP (not him, he has only been party leader for some 20 plus years) was blessed (past tense), my interpretation is fortunate, over the last 70 years to have had supporters and well wishers who have kept the flame shining and burning brightly. Like I stated in my original post, the address was all about the DLP and what they’ve stood for, not Mr Skerrit and his doings.
