Dominica is making significant strides in environmental policy, as highlighted by Edgar Hunter, Technical Advisor in the Ministry of Environment, during a recent presentation at the Centre for Renewable Energy and Technology Integration (CETRI).
The workshop, which is part of the Caribbean Environmental and Technical Research Initiative, is currently taking place at the Jungle Bay Resort in Dominca.
In his address, Hunter underscored the importance of sustainable land management and environmental protection, stating, “Sustainable land management is essential to protecting our ecosystems and supporting livelihoods.”
He detailed the government’s efforts to enhance land use policies, promote reforestation initiatives, and build climate resilience across the island.
A key aspect of Dominica’s strategy, Hunter shared, is the integration of traditional knowledge, particularly from the Kalinago Territory, into national policies. This approach highlights reported ongoing efforts to blend indigenous practices with modern scientific methodologies to tackle environmental challenges.
The CETRI Workshop gathers experts and policymakers from the Caribbean region to share insights and discuss sustainable solutions to common environmental issues.
Led by climate journalist Alison Kentish, the workshop aims to foster collaboration and innovation in addressing the pressing environmental challenges faced by member states.
As Dominica continues its push toward becoming a climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable nation, these discussions are integral to shaping the future of the island and its natural resources.
