Dominica Athletic Association extends congratulations to Thea LaFond on silver medal at World Championships

The Dominica Athletics Association (DAA) has issued a proud commendation to Thea LaFond following her groundbreaking victory at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on September 18, 2025.

LaFond’s triumph in the women’s triple jump not only secured her a silver medal but also marked a historic milestone for the nation. She became the first female athlete from Dominica to claim a medal at a World Outdoor Championships and is only the second Dominican to achieve such a feat, with Jerome Romain having earned a bronze in the men’s triple jump three decades ago in Gothenburg, Sweden.

DAA outlined LaFond’s impressive performances over the past two years, during which she claimed a gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games and a silver medal at the 2024 World Indoor Championships. The statement added that her consistent success has established her as one of the leading figures in her discipline worldwide.

“With each leap, she continues to raise Dominica’s flag high across the globe, carving her name into the history books and inspiring future generations,” said the statement.

Brendan Williams, President of the Dominica Athletics Association, expressed his admiration for LaFond’s historic accomplishment.

He stated, “Thea has etched her name in history and lifted the flag of Dominica to the very top of the world. This [silver] medal at the World Championships adds to her Olympic and World Indoor titles, making her one of the best in the world. It is a testament to her resilience, her belief in herself, and her commitment to excellence. We are immensely proud of her and the role she plays as a role model for young athletes across Dominica and the wider Caribbean.”

Williams also underscored the wider significance of LaFond’s success, noting,“It is fitting that 30 years after Jerome Romain’s bronze, Thea has now given us [silver]. This shows the depth of talent within Dominica and underscores the importance of continued investment in athletics. Her journey is proof that with dedication, the right support, and belief, our athletes can stand on top of the world.”

The DAA  said it extends its heartfelt congratulations to Thea LaFond, her coaching team, and all supporters who contributed to her extraordinary journey.

“This historic moment will forever remain a shining chapter in Dominica’s sporting history,” concluded the statement.
