The Commonwealth of Dominica is set to acknowledge His Excellency Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, with its most prestigious national accolade, the Dominica Award of Honour. This recognition is in acknowledgment of Prime Minister Modi’s significant contributions to Dominica during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as his efforts to enhance the bilateral relationship between India and Dominica. The award ceremony will occur at the India-CARICOM Summit, which is scheduled for November 19 to 21, 2024, in Georgetown, Guyana, with Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton, the President of Dominica, presiding over the event.
In February 2021, the Indian government, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, provided Dominica with 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. This generous gesture not only aided Dominica in its vaccination efforts but also allowed the country to extend support to neighboring Caribbean nations amid the pandemic.
The award acknowledges India’s broader support for Dominica in areas such as education and information technology. Additionally, it highlights India’s role in promoting initiatives focused on climate resilience and sustainable development on a global scale.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit expressed that this award symbolizes Dominica’s appreciation for Prime Minister Modi’s unwavering support during a critical period for the nation and the Caribbean region as a whole. According to Skerrit,“Prime Minister Modi has been a true partner to Dominica, particularly during our time of need amid a global health crisis. It is an honour to present him with Dominica’s highest national accolade as a symbol of our gratitude for his support and as a reflection of the strong ties between our countries. We look forward to building on this partnership and advancing our shared vision of progress and resilience.”
Upon receiving the offer of the award, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the necessity of collaboration in addressing worldwide challenges such as climate change and geopolitical disputes. He reaffirmed India’s dedication to working alongside Dominica and the Caribbean to confront these pressing issues.
Both Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit will be present at the upcoming India-CARICOM Summit, which aims to address common priorities and explore potential areas of cooperation between India and the CARICOM member states.
