The Dominica Bar Association has announced its schedule of activities for Law Week 2025. The Association’s leadership shared that the celebration is set to take place from Saturday, July 26, through Saturday, August 2. Throughout the week, a series of events are planned to engage the legal community and the general public, including:
– Pro Bono Initiative at the State Prison: This day will feature a presentation of books to support the prison’s proposed library, along with distribution of grocery and supply vouchers. Additionally, free legal consultations will be offered to select inmates, providing essential legal support within the facility.
– Church Service: A special service will be held at Bethesda Methodist Church, fostering community spirit and reflection.
– Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Seminar: Legal professionals will participate in a CLE seminar focusing on the Titles by Registration Act, aimed at enhancing their knowledge and expertise.
– Public Panel Discussion on the Riot Act: Scheduled for Thursday, July 31, at the UWI Centre, beginning at 7 PM, this open-to-the-public discussion will explore the Riot Act and its implications. The event is co-hosted by CGUnited Insurance Company.
– Fundraising Gala and Awards Dinner: The week will culminate with an elegant evening at the Fort Young Hotel, featuring awards to distinguished lawyers. The event’s primary goal is to generate funds for the Bar Association’s Secondary School Scholarship Fund, a charitable initiative maintained since Tropical Storm Erica to support local students’ educational pursuits.
It is all good hearing about Dominica Bar Association gears up for Law Week 2025. What caught my attention was a Public Panel Discussion on the Riot Act. Why such particular discussion and obsession with such act. Does this affect the everyday living of Dominicans in obtaining legal services. Why not talk about the structure of fees for legal services. Why not talk about Law and ethics and how Lawyers should be held accountable for breaching the public trust. What about a discussion on how Dominicans can get redress for poor legal services. What about dispelling myths of the legal system, and it’s structure, like the saying, quote, “The PM controls the Courts.” at some time a person may need a Lawyer in their life, and they want to know that they are comfortable with the service they are paying for.
