Dominica-born Antigua-based journalist wins climate journalist award

Elesha-George

Elesha George’s groundbreaking work, particularly her in-depth report titled “Energy Independence or Extinction: Antigua and Barbuda at a Crossroads,” has earned her the prestigious Best Multimedia Climate Storytelling award at the Climate Tracker awards, in partnership with Open Society Foundations.

Her contributions highlight Antigua and Barbuda’s remarkable journey toward renewable energy and the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

George, originally from Dominica but who practices journalism in Antigua and Barbuda, expressed pride in representing the Eastern Caribbean, sharing that her passion for the environment stems from her upbringing in Dominica, often referred to as the “nature island of the Caribbean.”

Reflecting on her childhood, she stated, “I grew up around natural things, ran around barefoot, and appreciated the animals and creatures in my environment. When I see these wonders threatened, something inside me goes into gear. That’s when I said we need to focus on environmental news.”

“I have heard people saying that they don’t care about the environment because we are going to die anyway. But would you prefer to live 40 years with good quality air or 40 terrible years? The quality of life is what we have to invest in”, she added

Despite facing challenges from limited newsroom resources in the Caribbean, George is optimistic about prioritizing environmental reporting.

Her accolades extend beyond this award; she is also an alumna of the Young Leaders of America Initiative (YLAI), won the ‘Best Journalist’ award at the Antigua Barbuda Gospel Music & Media Awards in 2021, and received the Junior Chamber International ‘Media Trailblazer Award’ in 2023.

These awards are becoming meaningless. This Antigua Observer News reporter has very little analytical skills. I listen to Observer News pretty often and its rather shallow, no depth. What you get from her and her other colleagues is churnalism.

The news should be unbiased, thought-provoking, insightful, informative, well-researched, engaging and well-written. There is little evidence of this.

What the public gets as news are prepackaged materials such as press releases, wire
stories, and stories from other media outlets. These are put out there without any fact
    checking.

“Her contributions highlight Antigua and Barbara’s remarkable journey toward renewable energy.” Really? There is no geothermal plant; no mega solar farm; no hydro-electricity; no windmills that produce electricity. There are just a few electric vehicles.

The present government in A & B has destroyed fragile ecosystems in Barbuda, and destroy sea beds and sensitive areas of lands in Antigua. She…

I’m pretty sure a quick Google search of the work I have done and continue to do, far beyond what you listen to on Observer, would show the ignorance in your comments.

You need to win an award for looking so silly the way you dress, standing!
Now the award you won might be the first of its kind, since we’ve never heard of such in the past.
Not surprised anyway; since Dominicans woke up one morning only to find out that Roosevelt Skerrit, declared Dominica to be the first and remains the only resilient country on planet earth.
Hence everything, agricultural plants, vegetables and all are resilient!
Everything no matter what the circumstances, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and even when burnt by fire or brimstone, they simply return to their original shapes!
However, if we look carefully; we’ll find structures damaged by hurricane Maria that are standing unable to return to their original shape.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 9 Thumb down 12

Son, your personal attacks show signs of dementia, but we know Toretts syndrome can get in the way of expression. There comes a time for older folks to relax and attempt to enjoy your old days quietly, let the young people do their thing. It’s the future, you may not be around when it takes flight. Call the grand kids, play around, they should bring joy to a seemingly bad day.

Well, it takes one to know the other: so if you are convicted that I have dementia, the fact I am able to read and comprehend your comments has rendered you diagnosis flawed!
As such I diagnose you to be demented!
That’s your disease, which is different to dementia: worse than dementia you see:
        Hahahahahaha!

If she had pass by my home I’d give her a pants and a shirt. Not everyone knows how to dress to suit the occasion. But she looks like a nice lady not in no commess. Just a little Wardrobe Malfunction.
