The Dominica Chess Federation (DCF) had a successful kickoff of its first community chess gathering in Portsmouth. According to the DCF, the inaugural event took place on Saturday, September 6, at Benjamin Park, where participants arrived from 12:00 noon and enjoyed over four hours of lively chess matches and fellowship.

To celebrate this significant achievement, DCF President Carlton Morvan, Vice-President Edger Berridge, and Candidate Master Nigel Francis traveled from Roseau to show their support and actively participate in the occasion.

The release shared that this Portsmouth chess initiative aligns with the Federation’s broader goal of promoting the game across Dominica, aiming to make chess accessible to individuals of all ages and skill levels across every community.

“This is just the beginning of what we hope will become a vibrant and sustainable chess culture in Portsmouth,” said President Carlton Morvan. “We welcome everyone in the region — from first-time learners to experienced players — to join us, discover the joy of chess, and grow together as a community.”

Ongoing weekly sessions are scheduled to continue in Portsmouth, offering residents a regular chance to connect through the game.

Those interested in joining are encouraged to share their contact information with the Federation to stay informed about upcoming events: https://forms.gle/Sk3erMF9PwxyFJN96

The Dominica Chess Federation stated that it “remains committed to fostering intellectual growth, discipline, and
community engagement through the game of chess, and looks forward to seeing the Portsmouth chess community thrive.”
