The conclusion of the Dominica Chess Festival marks a significant milestone in the island’s chess development. This notable event was facilitated through collaboration with the Confederation of Chess for the Americas (CCA), highlighting the growing integration of Dominica into the regional chess community.
The organizers expressed sincere appreciation to their partners for their unwavering dedication to advancing chess on the island, saying via media release,” Their involvement was not only vital in organising the festival, but also a true sign of recognition: our island is becoming part of the wider chess family of the Americas. It was thanks to this support and trust that the festival took place and left participants and visitors with unforgettable memories.”
It was reported that despite encountering adverse weather conditions—specifically, a flood watch in effect from noon to 6:00 PM on September 13—the event proved to be a triumph. Participants and spectators, approximately fifty to sixty in number, gathered under tents at the Roseau Promenade, staying safe amid the rain.
According to the DCF, the central focus remained the game itself. Novice players eagerly challenged more seasoned opponents, while children delighted in the giant chess set and standard boards. The event also reportedly attracted numerous onlookers—some observing with curiosity, others engaging with questions—demonstrating the universal appeal and inclusivity of chess.
A particularly memorable moment, shared the release, occurred when His Excellency Miguel Manuel Fraga Gonzalez, the Cuban ambassador to Dominica, joined the festivities. He played a friendly match with Carlton Morvan, the President of the Dominica Chess Federation. His participation underscored the international spirit of friendship and cultural exchange that chess fosters.
The Dominica Chess Federation extended heartfelt thanks to several groups:
1. The local chess community, spanning all ages, that brought vibrancy and camaraderie to the event. Their presence filled the Promenade with joy and enthusiasm. The federation expressed particular delight at welcoming new faces and genuine interest in the game. They look forward to future gatherings:
– Every Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the UWI campus (in-person sessions)
– Every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. on Lichess: https://lichess.org/team/dominica-team
2. The media outlets, radio stations, online platforms, and bloggers who have consistently supported the festival’s promotion. Their efforts—through news coverage, announcements, program invitations, and word of mouth—have significantly increased chess’s visibility within Dominica’s cultural landscape. This exposure opens new opportunities for youth engagement and societal strengthening.
In closing, the federation emphasized that small individual efforts, when combined, can lead to meaningful change. They expressed gratitude to all who have joined in this journey of growth and development, reaffirming their commitment to fostering the game of chess on the island.

Congratulations! I commend the organizers for including so many young men in this game. Keep going and best of luck in the future.
