The Government of Dominica is implementing new remuneration package for Dominican doctors.
This was according to Health Minister Cassanni Laville while speaking as a guest on Focus on Government and Development Program on DBS hosted by Dionne Durand-Smith this week.
“We continue to consult with our doctors. We want to ensure that the remuneration package is fair, and that is something that we have reviewed over the past weeks and months,” Laville said
He continued, “We are at a point right now where we have prepared a draft in terms of offerings for a new package, a new improved package. Cabinet would have discussed that.”
According to Laville, since Dr. Kenneth Darrroux came in as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Dominica Hospital Authority he was offered the opportunity to review this offering, and he has been conferring with different specialists to review their package and ensure satisfaction.
“So this is the type of engagement that we have so that the Dominican doctors can have that dream right here in Dominica,” Laville stated
During the presentation of the 2025/2026 National Budget presentation in July 2025, Finance Minister Dr. Irving McIntyre announced that eleven (11) medical specialist positions be created effective August 1, 2025; an upgraded remuneration package to be approved for the medical specialist as well as other medical positions no later than August 6, 2025 and a Medical Professional Bill and Nursing Midwives Bill to be presented in Parliament in September 2025, are some of the measures government plans to put in place to address the public’s concerns regarding quality of care at the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital (DCFH).
“We will appoint a full-time Executive Chairperson to strengthen the governance, accountability, transparency, and to assure overall the delivery of high-quality patient care,” said Finance Minister Dr. Irving McIntyre at Friday’s 2025/26 National Budget session.
In addition to the post of Chief Executive Officer, he mentioned the appointment of a Clinical Director who will have the equal rank of Chief Executive Officer, reporting directly to the Executive Chairperson.
This individual will be responsible for overseeing the clinical and medical services and ensuring that we can address patient concerns in a proactive manner.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the new structure for the nursing service, which was established in the last financial year, will continue to be implemented in this financial year.
He added that to further motivate the nursing and medical services, this year, the government will launch a financial reward programme for outstanding performance. This programme will begin at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital, where patients and supervisors will evaluate the level of care provided by the doctors and nurses.
Dr. McIntyre said a total of ten awards will be granted per quarter to the most outstanding performers for the period
