Today, Dominica joins the Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) in celebrating OECS Colours Day, a vibrant occasion that underscores the unique strength found in diversity and unity among the member islands. The event, as articulated by CARICOM Ambassador Dr. Gerard Jean-Jacques, is more than a display of colours; it is a powerful reminder of the collective resilience and shared prosperity of the OECS community.
OECS Colours Day features a symbolic palette of the OECS colours: white, navy blue, yellow, and lime green—each hue representing distinct qualities and collective strength. Dr. Jean-Jacques explains that these colours symbolize not only the individual beauty of each island nation but also the enhancement that results when these nations come together. “Individually, we are strong and resilient,” he notes, “but together, we are even stronger.”
In a statement released a few days ago, the OECS invited the residents of member nations to ‘show their colours’ : “OECS citizens and supporters are invited to wear the official OECS colours – green, yellow, white and navy blue – as a symbol of shared identity, and in celebration of the OECS’ enduring legacy and regional impact. Whether at work, school or home, the OECS Commission encourages everyone to participate in this commemorative regional moment.”
The celebration highlights recent examples of solidarity among OECS nations, especially their united response to challenges posed by adverse weather conditions and the impacts of COVID-19. In the current geopolitical landscape, the member states continue to band together in pursuit of prosperity and peace for their citizens, exemplifying the enduring power of regional cooperation.
The core message of OECS Colours Day emphasizes that while each island has its unique characteristics, the true strength lies in unity. The colours serve as a metaphor for the importance of celebrating both individual differences and collective togetherness. Ambassador Dr. Jean-Jacques in his statement, encourages individuals to carry this message into their personal lives—recognizing that although we may differ from our neighbors, working together within communities fosters growth and resilience.
In Dominica, the observance of OECS Colours Day will be marked by community activities aimed at fostering this spirit of unity. Over the weekend, Dominicans engaged in various initiatives, including sprucing up the Bells Primary School—a site that Dr Jean-Jacques said was already well-maintained but received a fresh touch from community volunteers. Additionally, a local 4-H club partnered with the hospital to plant greenery in a community planter, symbolizing growth, renewal, and the nurturing of collective well-being.
As Dominica continues to celebrate OECS Colours Day, the message remains clear: our differences are our strengths, but it is our unity that truly defines us. Through shared efforts and mutual respect, the islands of the OECS can build a future of peace, prosperity, and resilience.
Celebrating OECS Colours Day – This is an unknown. Hardly anyone living in the OECS islands has ever heard of this day. it’s compelling evidence that this organization acts like an exclusive social club. Only the misleaders know about the functions and special celebrations about this club.
This meeting is the exact replica of all those that have been convened before – USELESS!
The difference between us and the rest is Dominica is a full fledged communist country where we vote for a prime Minister but being governed by communist China, unlike the other OECS countries that are not their yet. So that OECS unity celebration is just a commoflaged
