Dominica named among safest Caribbean destinations

A scene in Dominica

Dominica has been named among the six safest Caribbean destinations due to its low crime rate, making it ideal for visitors who travel alone.

The island, together with The Cayman Islands, Barbados, Saint Lucia, Aruba, and Bermuda, stood out on a list of safest Caribbean destinations compiled by the travel magazine, Travel and World Tour (TWT) in its latest issue, released last week.

The magazine pointed out that these islands are “ideal for travelers seeking peace of mind.”

“According to the U.S. Department of State, these islands hold a Level 1 advisory rating, meaning they are low-risk destinations where travelers are advised to ‘Exercise Normal Precautions,'” the magazine said.

This rating, combined with each island’s welcoming atmosphere and quality medical facilities, makes them particularly attractive for tourists, including solo travelers and families.

Dominica was recognized for its low level of crime.

“Dominica’s low crime rate makes it an ideal choice for solo travelers, particularly nature enthusiasts,” the magazine stated.

“With a variety of guided tours available for hiking, diving, and other eco-friendly activities, travelers can explore with confidence and safety. The island’s focus on conservation and sustainable tourism provides a peaceful atmosphere and a secure experience for all. Local guides are knowledgeable and prioritize visitor safety, enhancing the experience for those venturing into Dominica’s natural landscapes.”

It said Dominica, which is known as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean,”is famous for its untouched rainforests, hot springs, and incredible hiking trails.

“With over 70,000 international tourists in 2023, Dominica has emerged as a favored destination for eco-tourism,” the magazine pointed out.

“U.S. visitors accounted for 23% of arrivals, with a significant 21% of visitors coming from the French West Indies.”

The Cayman Islands also stood out for its low crime rate and its “friendly atmosphere and safety-focused approach make it an ideal choice for all types of travelers.”

Barbados stood out for its vibrant nightlife and bustling markets in a secure environment which makes it an ideal destination for solo and group travelers alike. Additionally, TWT said its advanced healthcare system provides peace of mind for travelers. Saint Lucia was named for its low crime rate and the maintenance of a strong security by the government which according to TWT, ensures a safe environment for tourists.

TWT said Aruba’s “infrastructure is designed to support tourism security, making public spaces, beaches, and hotel areas safe and accessible for everyone, including solo travelers and families. With friendly locals and a relaxed atmosphere, Aruba remains a top choice for those seeking a peaceful, secure Caribbean getaway.”

Bermuda was recognized for its “exceptionally low crime rate” and its well-maintained infrastructure which TWT says “provides a safe and pleasant experience for all visitors.”
