As part of National Emblems Week, Dominica observes Flag Day today.
A Flag Day Motorcade, organized by the Commonwealth of Dominica Cultural Division, will take place around Roseau and other parts of the island.
Flag Day was instituted by the Cultural Division as part of Independence Celebrations for the population to display, and give recognition to the flag.
The flag is one of Dominica’s symbols of nationhood and national identity. It is the product of the recent design of November 3, 1988.
The flag consists of a circular emblem of red bearing a blue-chested Sisserou Parrot standing on a twig. The parrot which must always face the flag pole, is encircled by ten lime-green stars. The ten stars are outlined in yellow. This is superimposed by three vertical and three horizontal stripes of yellow, black, and white forming a triple-colored cross against a general background of forest green. Each symbol and color seen on the flag has a specific meaning and purpose.
The first version of Dominica’s flag was officially revealed on November 3, 1978, at the Government headquarters. It was designed by the late cultural icon, Dr. Alwin Bully for a flag competition held earlier that year. Whereas most flags have a maximum of four colors, Dominica’s national flag has eight which makes it more complex and expensive to produce.
Dominicans at home and abroad are encouraged to display their flags throughout the day.

Before celebrating flag day the government of dominica should burn all the fake flags in dominica. Pick them up from all vendors. Most dominica do not know the flag because there are so many. Parrot facing right, parrot facing left. White or yellow around the stars representing the parishes.for those who do not know the real flag you can get it from the site for the united nations.
It is a shame and disgrace that fakes flags are sold in it own country. The government does not see that are a problem.
the flag of the People’s Republic of China is what we should be flying by now. What are the details of the MOU with China. The People of Dominica have been begging to know what is really up, what deals contracts and arrangements have been signed with our country and its resources. How can Dominicans continue to vote for a party that continues to disrespect them, the rule of law and accountability and transparency. I know why, because we are greedy wicked people and willfully turn a blind eye to nonsense, as long as we getting butter to pass in our mouth, or it not affecting us directly. But, is flag day. I self sell mine long ago in a CBI transaction.
since after I saw our flag in the middle east, where one of Skerrits vendors was selling our flag like he was in the fish market selling fish, I felt so embarrassed and belittled that zilost all respect for the flag I once esteemed so high.
