Dominica put on alert for missing fishing vessel, three crew members from Antigua

The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) has contacted neighbouring islands, including Dominica and Martinique, as they continue to search for the FV MOYA, a 30-foot fishing vessel that went missing with three fishermen on board: Mathias Greenaway, Glenmore Matthew, and Clancy John.

The vessel departed on February 21 and was expected back by 8 AM on February 22 but did not return, prompting the Coast Guard to initiate a search around 2 PM on the same day.

Rough seas and a high surf advisory have complicated the search efforts, leading to the escalation of the operation. The ABDF has partnered with multiple agencies to conduct aerial and sea searches through February 25. Authorities are seeking any information from the public to assist in locating the vessel and have emphasized the importance of maritime safety regulations.

The disappearances of fishermen in the Caribbean waters as they ply their trade have been happening too often. The relevant authorities have to make and enforce laws pertaining to safety measures before taking out to sea. Life jackets and at least some kind of communication device must be mandatory.

“Make SAFETY a reality and don’t become a fatality.”

Lbo, I agree with you, but people should know when it is too risky to go on the ocean!
In the case of the trio, one I know, if they are dead that could be avoided.
You see,!they choose to venture into a storm, after the weather service issued a small craft warning not go out to Sea.
I hope that they are still somewhere in the Caribbean Sea drifting, and will be found.
I been out there many times, and experienced rough Sea, if they were hit by a sixty or seventy foot tall wave, or taller, there is no way a thirty foot fishing boat could survive that.
      And that’s my worry!
Been brave is one thing, risking one’s life is something else.

Hope they find it and the crew.

*A vessel is a ship or large boat, there are no vessels on the islands.

This is something that hits close to home, whereas one of the missing fishermen Glenmore Matthew jr, is the nephew of Violet Matthew, who is the mother of three of my Children.
Captain Glenmore “Teddy” Matthew Sr., and I spent some time in Europe, Germany, Denmark sailing ship.
We brought the Danish built cargo ship MV Felskove to Antigua, and sailed the entire Caribbean prior to decommissioned.
My children are very sad remembering their late uncle, Carol Matthew was murdered on a ship anchored in the port in St. John’s.
The murders walked, because Antigua police claimed lack of evidence. Shortly after that my brother the late Inspector. Almore Robin of the same police force was gunned down, one of murderer confessed, they walked also. I pray and hope that the trio’s are yet alive, and will be found drifting, if their engine failed.
It is six days now since they were last seen at approximately 3:00 PM when they left. My hope is they didn’t spring a leak or capsized.

I’m sure Francisco, a very responsible human being, has the wherewithal to provide adequately for his children financially and otherwise.

The loss of the three gentlemen at sea calls for empathy. How insensitive and callous you are! This is not the time ad place for foolery. Is your heart made of stone?

        • March 1, 2025

you always run to your bums’ defense. nobody knows your name nobody knows what village you are from and what you do for a living. nobody knows if you are married and whether you have children, you are just a bum as Francisco is. what are you hiding, your bum. whenever UWP rats win a case you jump and bump, whenever they lose a case you think Skerrit runs the judiciary system. make up your mind, your bum.
