Dominica recorded 27 prostate cancer cases for 2024, says health minister

Health Minister Cassanni Laville

Health Minister Cassanni Laville has announced that Dominica has recorded a total of 27 prostate cancer cases in 2024.

His comments came as Dominica joined the rest of the world to observe Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September, a national initiative to promote early detection, screening, and support for those affected by prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system below the bladder. Abnormal growth of the prostate tissue is usually detected through screening tests, typically blood tests that check for prostate-specific antigen levels.

“Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in Dominica,” he said. “It is a condition that not only affects physical health, but also has significant impacts on families and communities.”

He continued, “The numbers speak clearly in 2024, out of 112 cases of cancer diagnosed in Dominica, 27 were prostate cancer. That means, nearly one in every four cancers, 24.1 percent, was prostate cancer.

Laville stated that this is a cause for concern, but also a cause for action.

Moreover, he pointed out that early detection saves lives.

“When prostate cancer is identified early through regular screening, it can be treated effectively, and survival rates are significantly higher,” Laville explained.

This dude has taken on the likeness of Diablo. Dominica is in serious health problems. A shoemaker is called to make heart surgery. Give me a break.

The churches have generally done an okay job spreading the wellness word. if yours has not done a prostate cancer program or announcement, bring it up.

With the Dominica Cancer Society, we organize free testing at various locations. It the tale of two cities: Some men eagerly came to be examined. Too much of a majority still have a deadly taboo about the finger back there. More always need to be done. What’s your contribution?

Why aren’t Dominica’s calling out the imposter within their healthcare system? Hence why is paracetamol they giving you when you go to princess Margaret hospital. You cannot even get a scan read in Dominica – is St. kitt’s they have to send for your results! ( DCFH isnt a real place and should not be called be call China frienship) it’s like asking an accountant to build a concrete house with no instructions… We need folks with insight and experience, not someone cosplaying as a minister.

What programs and strategies have you putting in place to curb this specific disease? NOTHING!

Get doctors to volunteer to have free testing in different communities throughout the year. Solicit corporate sponsorship. Have ongoing radio and televised educational programs on this specific topic. Be proactive!

A healthy nation can lead to lower healthcare expenses, benefiting both individuals and the government.
