Dominica joins the global community in observing International Men’s Day (IMD) tomorrow, November 19.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Social Services, this year, the country will celebrate this occasion under the theme, “From Boys to Leaders: Inspiring the Next Generation of Dominican Men,” which aligns with the international theme, “Supporting Men and Boys.”
International Men’s Day is defined as an international platform to shed light on issues faced by men and boys, advocate for gender equality, and recognize their significant contributions to society. The current year’s theme highlights the importance of mentorship, empowerment, and developing leadership qualities among young men. It also supports the government’s focus on promoting positive masculinity, responsible leadership, and community involvement, according to the Health Ministry.
The 2025 national celebration of IMD aims to achieve several key objectives as outlined in the press release:
– Highlight exemplary male role models and honor men’s roles in strengthening families, communities, and the nation’s development.
– Provide safe and open spaces for men to discuss social challenges they encounter, with the ultimate goal of fostering gender equality and social justice.
– Promote mentorship initiatives that encourage personal and professional development, empowering men to emerge as proactive community leaders and advocates for positive masculinity.
As part of the commemorations, the Ministry also stated that it is organizing the #MensDayDominica campaign to promote meaningful acts of recognition and support. The campaign encourages participants to:
1. Wear blue, the designated color for Men’s Day
2. Share a photo of a male figure in their life on social media using the hashtag #MensDayDominica to raise awareness
3. Send a private message to a man in their life to express gratitude and appreciation
All organizations are encouraged by Ministry officials to join the initiative and promote it across their networks. By celebrating men and fostering these positive, supportive interactions, the aim is to reduce feelings of isolation, enhance emotional well-being, and strengthen social bonds.
“The Ministry hopes that initiatives like this will continue to raise awareness of men’s and boys’ issues and remind men that they play a crucial role in achieving gender equality,” concluded the statement.
