Dominica on Wednesday, September 18, voted at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in favor of a resolution calling on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories within one year.
A total of 124 nations voted for the resolution, while 14 voted against it and 43 abstained. The resolution, however, is nonbinding and Israel has no legal obligation to observe it. It called on Israel to comply with international law and withdraw its military forces, immediately cease all new settlement activity, evacuate all settlers from occupied land,
and dismantle parts of the separation wall it constructed inside the occupied West Bank.
It also demanded that Israel return land and other “immovable property”, as well as all assets seized since the occupation began in 1967, and all cultural property and assets taken from Palestinians and Palestinian institutions.
It also said Israel should allow all Palestinians displaced during the occupation to return to their place of origin and make reparation for the damage caused by its occupation.
It called on member states not to sell arms or military equipment to Israel that would be used in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. It calls for a boycott of all Israeli products produced over the pre-1967 lines.
Israel was quick to denounce the resolution saying it was “disconnected from reality, encourages terrorism, and harms the chances for peace” by ignoring Israel’s real security concerns, particularly in the aftermath of the Hamas October 7 attack.
Israel further stated that the resolution encourages terrorist organizations like Hamas and countries like Iran that stand behind them.
“The resolution sends a message that terrorism pays off and yields international resolutions,” the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement. “The decision only encourages Hamas’s rejectionism with regards to the deal for the release of the hostages and a ceasefire and further distances the possibility of reaching such a deal.”
Israel captured the Palestinian Territories, namely the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in June, 1967. During that war, Israel also captured the Sinai Peninsular from Egypt and the Golan Heights from Syria.
The conflict was the third in the Arab-Israeli wars during which Israel faced Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.
It was a decisive victory for Israel and it expanded its territorial claims while confirming its military dominance in the Middle East.
Losses for the Arab states were disastrous with Egypt counting 11,000 casualties while Jordan counted 6,000 and Syria, 1,000. On the other hand, Israel lost only 700 men. However, the war marked a new phase in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians since it created hundreds of thousands of refugees and brought more than one million Palestinians under the rule of Israel.
Palestinians are reportedly welcoming the new UNGA resolution.
Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. ambassador, said it was a turning point “in our struggle for freedom and justice.”
“It sends a clear message that Israel’s occupation must end as soon as possible and that the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination must be realized,” he said.

Social democracies (capitalism/socialism hybrids) have done well to ok in some cases, Command economies like China’s are socialist/communist largely in name and are more autocratic with highly controlled and managed economies. They are more autocratic and capitalist then truly socialist.
