Dominican animal feed company launches first hatchery

Jeff Bellot, CariFeed Proprietor

CariFeed Inc., a Dominica registered animal feed company, has officially launched its very first hatchery on the island.

The hatchery, situated in Salisbury, is expected to benefit residents of that community and the rest of the island.

“We started this hatchery because we saw a need to make things easier for the farmers,” Proprietor of CariFeed, Jeff Bellot said while addressing the launching on Wednesday.

He continued, “This hatchery is a huge investment that we have a capacity of 6,480 chicks every 21 day cycle where we can make the broilers and the layer chicks right here in Dominica.”

Bellot said the goal is to work with the farmers allowing them to place their order in advance and to have the eggs ordered.

“At present the layers have been sold out and then we should be able to have more layers on island delivered to farmers on the second week of May and the broilers we do have some more left but we are bringing some more in,” he stated. “The consistency is there; we do not want to wait until we have no birds available to order.”

He indicated that it’s going to be a continued process.

Bellot also said that the company is looking to start manufacturing the feed in Dominica.

“We hope that the raw ingredients will be VAT free,” he noted. “Once that is completed, we are ready to go.”

The CariFeed proprietor went to say that the next step is to start a nursery for pigs where the company can breed pigs in Dominica.

Meantime, Parliamentary Representative of the Salisbury Constituency, Hector John, describes the initiative as a “great move” not only for Salisbury but for Dominica in general, “that people from different parts of Dominica can come to Salisbury and ensure that they can get their chicks and go home the same day.”

He said also that people will be gainfully employed.

“It also strengthens our local entrepreneurs; it gives them the encouragement to do more and to expand,” John stated.

Mr. Bellot, where VAT is concerned, you will have to go to Parliament to be able to have that waived, as the law is already set. Manufacturers and agro processors already have been branted a waiver of import duty and VAT on equipment and machinery, labelling and packaging materials on all of their imports as pronounced by the government in Spetember 2020.

Which leads me to ask, what are you willing to pay for, for your imported items? Must you be allowed to import your items all tax free and pay nothing to the government (it doesnt matter who the government is in this case)? Taxes should be paid brother, you already have the waiver on all your equipment and machinery, packaging and labelling items. not sure why you feel you shouldnt pay taxes for your raw materials (fertilized unhatched eggs).

Also i applaud your initiative as it will help with food security if we want to really be resilient. Next step is to produce your fertilized eggs locally to not pay VAT.

I cosider this a most wecomed initiative in Dominica and I hope that this undertaking is given all the necessary support.

Not only will it provide a source of employment but argues for agricultural diversification. we have observed the decline in crop based agriculture on our island,so in launching this exercise it has the additional impact of keeping agriculture alive even in the arm of animal husbandry.
So I say long live this project!! viva Saliusbury!!Viva Dominica!!

That’s what you call real development. The private sector investing in Dominica. Not government giving people things.I know, no government can eradicate poverty.God cannot lie, for He have said
“The poor you will always have with you.” John 12:8
So, there will always be people who will be in need of government assistance. But should not be its policy, just giving. And we know most of the time is just vote buying.

This is a great initiative and I applaud it. Good to have some good news for once. I’m especially pleased that this is a private enterprise, hopefully free from government interference.

Great going Jeff. Much needed as part of food security. We should look into biogas and compost production from the expected waste from these animals.

“At present the layers have been sold out and then we should be able to have more layers on island delivered to farmers on the second week of May and the broilers we do have some more left but we are bringing some more in,”

I am not sure if it the way he delivered the message, but I find it a bit confusing. The hatchery is supposed to produce chicks from eggs, but he talks about more broilers coming in and layers “on island”. It sound like they are importing chicks or chickens.

I am no expert on the subject. Can someone please explain what he meant?

I thinks it is great idea to have this type of business which will encourage more people to get into animal farming.

“We hope that the raw material will be VAT free” that is your first mistake to assume that this lazy, shiftless government understands how anything but passport sales works.
