Dominican Photographer Marcia Honychurch Featured in Caribbean Carnival Exhibition in Guadeloupe

Dominican photographer Marcia Honychurch is among eight acclaimed artists featured in the Pawòl A Mas exhibition, currently underway at the historic Marché de la Darse. Her work, which evokes the ancestral rhythms and communal spirit of the masquerade, contributes to a powerful visual dialogue on Caribbean Carnival traditions.

The open-air exhibition, curated by David Demetrius and Adeline Grégoire with support from Emilie Salaün, is a central event of the Karibbean Festimas Festival organized by Mas 2.0. Running until August 31, Pawòl A Mas invites visitors to explore the language of Carnival through photography, offering a 24/7 sensory experience in the heart of Pointe-à-Pitre.

The Pawòl A Mas exhibition features a diverse group of eight photographers from across the Caribbean, each offering a unique lens on the cultural richness of Carnival. Representing Dominica, Marcia Honychurch captures the ancestral rhythms and communal spirit of the masquerade. From Trinidad & Tobago, Maria Nunes presents an intimate portrayal of mas, while Guadeloupean artists Charles Chulem-Rousseau, Anaïs Cheleux, Daniel Dabriou, and Alvin Belrain explore local tradition and innovation, cultural symbolism, Carnival movement and form, and masquerade identity, respectively. Raquel Perez-Puig of Puerto Rico contributes imagery steeped in symbolism and motion, and Jamaica’s Marlon James portrays Carnival as a vibrant tapestry of resistance and joy. Together, their work forms a compelling visual narrative of the Caribbean’s shared heritage. The exhibition integrates Guadeloupean Creole into its visual storytelling, reinforcing linguistic identity alongside cultural expression. Supported by the Caribbean Culture Fund, DAC Guadeloupe, and Le Centre d’Art (Haiti), Pawòl A Mas fosters cross-border artistic exchange and highlights Carnival as a shared Caribbean heritage.

With one week remaining, the exhibition continues to attract both locals and tourists. Additional programming, including talks and guided tours, is expected to be announced via Mas 2.0 and Karibbean Festimas social media channels.
