Dominican squad heads to Guadeloupe for Carifta trials

The Aspire Athletics Club is set to send a talented group of 17 athletes and five officials to the upcoming Guadeloupe Carifta Trials.

Coach Nabi Wallace describes the group as a “diverse team of sprinters, jumpers, throwers, and middle-distance runners”. Among the team, five athletes have already secured their spots through qualification, with three of them holding national records.

The team is scheduled to leave on Wednesday, February 25. They’ll compete on Saturday, February 29, with events running from 3 PM to 8:30 PM.

Before the competition, the athletes will spend two days training at the stadium in Guadaloupe, allowing them to get familiar with the synthetic track, the jump pits, and the throwing areas—preparations that could make all the difference in their performance.

Wallace noted in an audio statement that preparing for this competition hasn’t been without its hurdles. He explained that the team has faced a range of challenges, from unpredictable weather to less-than-ideal field conditions as well as financial and logistical issues.

Nevertheless, we have pushed through with our fundraising committee and the help of the Dominica Athletics Association and the Dominica Olympic Committee, along with adopters, supporters, and well-wishers,” stated Wallace.”This is truly a team effort.”

Emphasing the focus on faith and unity, he added, “The aim is to help Dominica to make history with record-breaking performances and position Dominica to get a Carifta medalist.”

The 2026 Carifta Games are set for April 4-6 at the Kirani James Stadium in Grenada.

Kudos to the members of the Aspire Athletics Club for their selflessness and commitment and dedication to our young and aspiring athletes. Respect due!

Why hasn’t the current Roosevelt led administration seen it fit, and make one of their priorities to build a modern, state of the art athletic stadium? Sports are so much value to the lives of our young people, and bring joy, pride and togetherness, recognition and commendation to the nation.

For emphasis: Sports foster unity; heal a divided society; create national identity.
